My bunnies will chew their hidey houses at night which is loud. They used to have cardboard ones but now they have log ones. They’re still loud to chew on. Its hard to sleep when all you hear is the sound of chewing on wood. I thought about maybe using a towel or something and hanging it so they could hide in that? Idk if that would work but I know that Pinky would just eat it… They aren’t the type of bunnies to really hide though. I have only seen them hide a few times. They usually retreat to the litter box if something really scares them. I give them sticks to chew on so they have something to do at night and the day but those are even still loud… Should I take those away at night? I want them to have healthy teeth though. They have cardboard toys to chew on too. And what can I give them to hide in that is quiet? Thank you.

Rabbits are typically very active during portions of the night. Both my rabbits do most of their hay eating during the night. So rather than giving them something to hide in, you need to think about what you can provide that allows them to get out that energy while still letting you sleep. Perhaps you can have night-time chews that are a bit less noisy for you. Is hay eating bothersome? There are hay structures, like tunnels and stuff that you can buy that they can chew on at night and it may not make as much noise (though there is potential they’ll throw it around).

Lola decides chewing is her favorite nighttime activity, she is a HUGE CHEWER, I’m guessing because she was in a rescue where her toys were limited, she likes to get her teeth all nice and ground down, and loves all the toys she now gets. Her favorite chew toy is an apple log, but at night it is so darn noisy and she pushes it up against the xpen bars… it’s too much for nighttime, so I give it to her during the day, and during the night she chews on quieter toys and hay.

I think I got lucky in that Dorian goes to bed and sleeps pretty much when I do, granted that’s about 1AM to 8am (later morning on weekend, but he usually just goes and finds what food he didn’t eat before and then snacks hay), so maybe just lines up with bunny sleep time. We do a big play session right before and then a bit of snuggles, then feed him dinner… he usually has a couple of bites and then runs up to his sleeping area and other than a few minutes of rusting he snuggles down and is usually there still in the morning. I don’t know if maybe trying to tire them out before bed might help? Not sure about what to give them to hide in that is quiet if they insist on chewing loudly.

@Wick hmmmm I could look for some hay tunnels that are big enough for them. Pinky has two hay mats I put in at the front of his pen so he can destroy those instead of his blanket. Still kinda loud when he shreds it up. They love their apple sticks but those are loud too. I make cardboard toys for them that aren’t as loud though. I guess I should take out all the loud things and let them keep the quiet things. I just feel bad taking away their hidey houses, even though they barely hide.

Lol mine love chewing all the time! Especially Pinky. What quieter toys does Lola chew on?

@princedorianthebun What do you do for playtime that makes him tired? I was thinking of making mine cardboard tunnels to explore and hide treats in it. Lol mine always eat all of their food when they get it.

                Thank you all!

He usually just gets excited by hanging out and watching netflix/youtube, I think it’s having people active in the same room as him? He seems to just like an audience, so I don’t do too much other than I cheer him on when he runs through his tunnels and maybe we go explore my bedroom. Sometimes I just move all his things about so he has to put them back. Yesterday he tried to climb the curtains, then the wall, finally managed to climb a NIC grid and was very proud of himself, and not happy when I plucked him off and set him back on the ground… I am not sure why climbing is his newest hobby, he is absolutely horrible at it, but he spent about 1/2 hour giving it his best shot. Some evenings he runs zoomies, though I couldn’t tell you what triggers it.

The tunnel idea sounds great, anything that your bun finds fun and exciting should help! I think just hanging out and engaging with them is great, maybe teaching them some little tricks? or little obstacle course? I don’t know about all bunnies, but I think most like exploring new things, even if that’s their toys or boxes moved around. Are they free to run about prior to night time? If you just do a play time, maybe make it longer?

@princedorianthebun LOL sounds cute! I do wanna teach them tricks but if I hand feed treats to Pinky he gets too excited and nips lol. I have been letting them out sometimes while I’m trying to come up with a way to cover my wires in a better way than throwing a blanket over them and making sure the buns don’t go over there… I wanna be letting them out more during the day. Maybe I should get some cat tunnels for them. Hmmm they do like to explore… I wonder what I could set up for them lol.

Maybe the easiest thing would be to get some soft ear plugs? 🙂

My buns are super loud… I think I’ve just gotten used to the noises they make at night for the most part.

Also you can tell who’s in charge at my place… I end up adjusting my own behavior and let the buns do their thing LOL

@DanaNM LOL bunnies can definitely be bossy! Ear plugs are a good idea but I always wear headphones at night so I can watch and listen to stuff while I fall asleep. You’d think that would drown out the noise but nope! I’ve ended up just taking out Pinky’s hidey house and log house. He mostly just sits and poops on top of that house anyway lol. I think he’s the one that makes the chewing noises at night. Still trying to come up with a quiet hidey house though… And they have cardboard toys to chew on that are quieter. He still does seem to make noise when I wake up in the morning, trying to sleep again. He’ll be digging and chewing the hay mats at the front wanting to get out. I wish I had an extra room for them lol! They could party all night in there. For now they are noisy roommates. Mostly Pinky…
