This is my first time ever having a bun with a sore hock. I just noticed it yesterday  and today when I checked on it, it was red and tender. It’s small but I don’t want it to get infected. My girl’s on TMS suspension for another issue but sore hocks are not a side effects.

She’s been on the same flooring type since January and her previous home had her on wire flooring. Why would this suddenly show up now?

        Recommendations on treatment?

You can apply sudocream, or special sore hock cream is also available  to treat any inflammation of the hock

Usually sore hocks are from poor flooring, poor posture , nails not clipped properly, excessive weight or due to not having enough fur on that part of their foot. Try and figure out why you are seeing sore hocks and treat the root cause if possible

In the meantime you can keep back some of her fur and use it like a cushion for heel when wrapping it. Here is a good article that explains how to go about it :

If the skin is broken, she should definitely be evaluated by a vet as those situations can escalate into bone issues very quickly.  They will be able to give you Silvadene if it’s that extensive.  If the skin is not broken, bag balm is always a good safe solution as well!

What kind of flooring is she currently on?

Sudocream? Is there a brand or is this an ingredient in the cream? Any brand recommendations and should I be able to get this at any pharmacy supply?

Also the same questions for silvadene.

Karou (she’s a rex mini so already has super thin paw fur) saw the vet yesterday who said it is not infected but to keep an eye on it. The vet believes Karou’s been stress grooming due to a new unspayed girl. (The new girl, Alfred, has some medical issues that she’s being treated for and can not be spayed until then. Which is sending us into month 3.)  😥

The vet recommended rabbit resting boards which arrive tomorrow. I’ve also doubled the layers of fleece (it was 2 layers, now it’s 4), added a cat sleeping mat & triple sized her litter box to help prevent her staying in urine. Her nails are typically trimmed oncsilva development.

I’m very hesitant to wrap her foot as I’m pretty sure she’d chew it off.

Any recommendations or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Her nails are typically trimmed once a month. Not sure what happened on that major typo at the end.

My girl bunny, Psyron aged 7 ½ had sore hocks few years ago. It can also form from poor litter box or cage conditions. Turns out they were peeing on top of the hay and then stepping on it. Led to sore hocks in the female and we quickly resolved that.

If it’s small and unbroken we changed her living condition, washed her feet very gently and carefully and monitored here for a few weeks. Bumps went down and never came back. We still check her weekly and double check her nail length twice a month.

Is Sudocream available over the counter or prescription only?

My bun got sore hocks last winter, when he was poorly with something unrelated. It healed well with cleaning, applying of antibacterial cream and wrapping. If the skin is not broken you can use spray-on band aid, but don’t if there’s broken skin, because it would be very painful. Read the instructions for use carefully and protect the bun’s eyes etc. I used Opsite spray-on bandage for dogs and cats, but there are many other brands.

Many buns will remove any form of bandage put on them, but you could try and see how it goes. Here’s instructions with pictures of how to make the wrap described in the link Dface gave you http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sorehocks.html

I always save the fur I brush off of rabbits, because it is the absolute best material to wrap sore hocks with. I had to take good care to really tuck the piece of fur in under the self-adhesive wrap, because if my bun could grab the fur sticking out, he’d pull it out of the wrap.

In my case I think the culprit was a rather abrasive wool mat, that I’ve since covered with two big vet bed mats. I know some people here have had good results with memory foam bath mats in the rabbit area.

Sudocrem is OTC. It has zinc oxide, which helps with healing. You can also use Manuka honey, but if you do, wrapping is a must, because Manuka honey is very palatable for rabbits (it tastes like normal honey), and they will lick it off if they can reach it.
