I have some furminator brushes for my cats and I wanna know if it’s fine to use on my bunny. I got my two buns last week on Sunday. Pinky is shedding a lot right now. I don’t want to make him smell like cat because I’m going to start prebonding him with my other bun in about two weeks. I’ll probably have to keep brushing him a few times before then. Sometimes when I see him groom he gets fur stuck to his mouth or nose and I pick it off. I brushed him the other day on the floor while he ate veggies with a brush I bought for them, but I think a furminator will get more fur off quickly. Could I spray the brush with vinegar and water and wipe it dry? Will that get rid of the cat scent? Or will that just make him smell like vinegar? Lol

I have a furminator for my lion head angorra cross, but the thing about them is they are incredibly harsh on skin, and rabbits have skin like paper. A lady who owned a pet shop up from me used a furminator on a rabbit and she tore the rabbits skin while grooming.

I think recently on this forum an owner scratched their poor rabbit badly enough with a furminator as well

So while I own one for my rabbits , I don’t advise it and I don’t really use it.

Depending on your rabbits coat type you have a lot of other options. For long coated buns I use a combination of various tooth combs with different spacing- start large, work my way to the fine spaced ones. And I also use a small slicker brush.

For short hair I dont really bother with brushes, I wet my hand and wipe it over their backs (the wet on your hand will get the fur to stick to it, wipe your hand and continue this way -your hand shouldnt be soaking, just damp enough to catch the fur)

or I use a lint roller and roll the fur off that way

@Dface Thank you! Yeah I wasn’t sure if it would be too rough for them. They both have short hair. This morning I used a double sided brush and one side has soft bristles which got some of the loose fur off. I could try the damp hand next time!

I agree with Dface. You can use one, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you really know what you’re doing. It wouldn’t take much to severely “over groom”.

I recommend the HairBuster, especially because you have short haired rabbits. It works great on my two bunnies. It can feel a little rough if you pull too hard, so at first it may take a little while to get used to the way it works but I overall recommend. I also do some hand pulling for looser tufts of hair.

I use a ‘hand brush’ – not sure what it is called, a friend gave it to me – and all you have to do is pet the bun and it takes off all the excess fur. Makes grooming fun. 😉 I think she might have got it off of Amazon.
