About a month ago Alfred was rehomed to myself and my girl Karou (she was also a rehome and has been with me about 7 months). Karou was NOT happy and due to some health issues and not yet being spayed, Alfred is kept separate from Karou but in the same room and they can see each other.

Karou has been a little off so I took her to the vet for a check up and the vet said there were some spots on her stomach where she had been stress grooming (her fur’s still growing back from her spay surgery). I’ve been giving her more very focused attention and making sure I acknowledge her every time I walk past but I thought some hideaways in her space might help. I never put any in because she completely ignored all other hideaways I gave her or peed on them and tried to drown it in her water bowl.

She’s on TMS as she had a sensitive stomach and the vet wanted to make sure her UTI didn’t flare up from stress.

Any recommendations on hideaways? I’ve tried the wood one but I don’t think she liked the lack of 2nd exit and also the hay tunnel but that she only throws out of her way. She does have a stuffed moon she used to snuggle with all the time but I haven’t seen her use it at all recently. I thought maybe a cat snuggle cup or a cat tent as she stretches out when sleeping. It has to be machine washable because even though she’s litter box trained, she still pees all over her crate. Karou loves people and the cat (though the cat’s terrified of anything larger than a hamster or smaller than a big dog) so I was really surprised she reacted so strongly against Alfred. First time human bonder naive hopes I guess.

Any advice on hideaways and how to discourage stress grooming? Should I make it so Karou can not see Alfred at all? I do have frosted panels I can put between them so they can see shapes but nothing distinct.

I think cardboard boxes are great hideaways, esp if she is prone to destroying them, because they are easy to replace.

Another nice one is to use an upside down laundry basket with some doors cut out of the sides (and sanded down so the edges aren’t sharp).

If she isn’t spayed and is removing belly fur, that sounds more like nesting behavior, prob triggered by the presence of Alfred. False nesting is stressful to females, so spaying might actually solve a lot of the problems. Are you planning to get her spayed soon?

Blocking her view of Alfred will likely help too. You could rig up towels to some fencing or to the sides of their pens that face each other.

She is spayed, was in May. I think she might like a basket, she loves jumping into things.  I’ll rig up a block between them with blankets and panels.

Alfred’s not yet spayed because we’re still working on clearing up her syphilis and the vet said to wait.

Oh gotcha, sorry misread that. In any case, having one hormonal bun can definitely set off a castrated bun.

I once did an emergency rescue on some unneutered boys and had them in my bathroom overnight till I could take them to the shelter. My spayed and bonded female was SO MAD even though she couldn’t see them. She thumped at them all night and was generally very displeased.

Hopefully some hides and blinders will help. 🙂

Thanks for the tips. I’ve hung up a blanket and karou already seems to be a bit more relaxed. Though that could just be me being hopeful. I’ll work on her hideaway tomorrow when I can run to the store.

I didn’t realize an unfixed bun could upset a fixed girl but I suppose that makes sense. Karou doesn’t thump at Alfred thankful. Only me when I use my book light and she wants it dark. 😀

Haha that’s so cute about the book light! Glad the blanket seems to be helping!

I have 2 cat tents and all of my rabbits like them. Of course they’re 3/4 destroyed now, because bunny, but it least they’re soft and safe to hide in. I also get good responses from boxes.
