hey all! didn’t think this really fit in the q & a or anything since its more of a casual question, but i want to hear about your New England rexes! How are their personalities and whatnot? I’ve only ever really had holland lops and a few lionheads, and i know every breed is a little different. you can post pics too, cos they’re adorable! getting mine on saturday (:

Aw how precious! And yeah, I know breed doesn’t determine it entirely, but I read that they’re pretty sweet. I didn’t have much of a choice on breed, to be honest – it was a pain to find a rabbit here, as I live in a state with a low population, in a small town. I’m so excited for Panini to come home, though (:

Initially we were meant to get an older rabbit that was rather aggressive, but that fell through. Luckily we found some seven week old babies soon after (:

Oh, she is just precious! 😀 Very beautiful and elegant. 🙂 Panini is the perfect name for her, too!

I’ve never heard of them either, the only thing I can find are New England Cottontails. It doesn’t look like they have the typical Rex fur. I agree with LBJ, they look like New Zealands or possibly Flemmies. They’re cute either way though. 🙂

Both parents have typical short rex fur and no topcoat. Can’t really tell with Panini because baby fur.

Hmm… interesting. The rex gene is recessive, so now I’m curious. I wonder if another bunny slipped in under the radar and the breeder is mistaken on paternity. You’ll have to post more pictures as she gets older. I would be interested in seeing what she looks like.

Does she have curly whiskers and no eyelashes? That’s common with rex breeds. She could be a mixed breed?

Her whiskers aren’t curly, no. But we’ve seen the parents, who were both rexes? I’m aware rexes usually have curly whiskers as we have many rex rats, but I wasn’t sure if the same applied to rabbits.

It does! Most rex rabbits have somewhat curly whiskers! It’s very cute!

I don’t know, when I look at Panini I see nothing that makes me think Rex. I’m pretty sure even with babies you can tell by the fur that they’re Rexes. My bun had the Rex fur as a baby and he’s only part Rex. And they should have curly whiskers. As LBJ said, a different male could be the father. Were there any other kinds of rabbits around or were they all Rexes?

Also, I can’t find anything about New England Rexes online whatsoever. I don’t want to assume, but it seems to me like they’re selling mystery mix bunnies and made up a fancy name to go with it. Nothing against Panini of course, she’s beautiful and perfect! 🙂

The most someone said is she has a rex face. But yeah, I’m also questioning it. I don’t really mind if she’s a mixed breed, I think she’s beautiful and I love her ridiculously long ears! She’s really cute. It’s just strange to me that we asked and they didn’t just say “mixed breed,” but she ALSO said some of the siblings went to 4-H kids, and as a former rabbit shower (i feel AWFUL about it nowadays, i was a kid) I know that not just any rabbit can be shown. So??? I really do not know. It could’ve been another buck that was the father I suppose, we didn’t get to see most of their hutch because she was dropped off to us. But she identified both of the parents as black rexes. From the photos, they do have rex fur. But maybe it was a different buck that got to her somehow and the owner just didn’t know.

Huh. Its strange, both parents match perfectly what a Rex rabbit looks like. I also couldn’t find specifically “New England” rexes, but the ma and pa very much look like normal, not-mini rexes with the coat type and shapes and whiskers. I wonder if the breeder got mixed up, because no, Panini doesn’t look like a rex besides her shape and size.

Panini and a rex of the same color. She has the same body and ear shape but smoother, flatter fur.

                                      PaniniA rex
