        I have a few questions. First, how do I keep litter box odours down? I’m using pine pellets (horse bedding) with hay piled on top. Also using cat litter boxes (one for each bunny – I have two). I come into my room and I can smell the bunny pee and when I bend down in front of the pens I smell the territorial onion poops. Do puppy pee pads at the bottom of the litter boxes help with pee smells? Or will they just chew them? And how often should I take out the dirty litter? I’m assuming as needed. And how often should I spray the litter box with vinegar and water to really clean it? I’d also like to know how often you guys spot clean and change fleece. My bunnies are still leaving random poops (probably territorial, I just got them Sunday and they are in separate x pens next to each other) so I feel like I need to spot clean morning and night, and change the fleece when it gets dirty. I’d like to just spot clean once a day to not bug them so much. I also have to put them in a carrier to be able to clean the pens (one at a time), because they aren’t allowed to run around my room until their stitches are healed from being neutered. What do you guys do? Thanks.

          There’s not too much you can do about the onion-y smell of poops… they are mighty as they serve their purpose well, haha. That scent you smell is very mild I’m sure compared to how rabbits actually smell it– I’m sure they work really well as territory markers! Thankfully, no one is spraying pee on your walls instead, haha.

          You can do a small splash of apple cider vinegar in the water and that can help neutralize urine smell. I’m unsure if it’d do anything with the territorial poops.

          I use plastic boot boxes. I will spray the bottom when I see that the litter is leaving marks on the bottom, so it’s very much “as I notice it”. Similar to the water bowl scenario, the better you do at the regular cleaning, the less you need to do any sort of serious cleaning. I have never actually done a dump of all litter and like, spraying the entire bottom. Seems unnecessary at this point since it’s kept relatively clean already.

            @Wick Thank you so much! Yes those poops are meant to be smelly LOL. And I’ve only had one pee incident the other day which was just a little in the corner, so I moved the litter box into that corner and I haven’t had any pee accidents since. I also wiped it up and put it in the litter box so he knows not to do that anymore. How often do you just spot clean the litter box?

              Maybe once a month it seems to have some build up to wipe? Not very often. I clean the litterboxes daily, so I scoop out soiled litter and replace it. I know that is a higher frequency than others, but honestly I am still curious how people can only clean the litterbox once every couple days, haha.

                I dump my whole litter boxes every other day. I’m too lazy to spot clean lol. Since I have a cheap source of pellets and hay that’s the easiest way to go for me, and I notice there aren’t many un-soaked pellets left by the time I dump it. I add new hay to top it up in between changes as well, so there is always fresh hay on top.  When I notice they are looking a bit gross, I rinse them out and wipe with vinegar (prob every week or two???).

                I would say if you are smelling it, then it needs to be more frequent, but since your boys are newly neutered they might be extra stinky and should get better with some time for hormones to drain.

                I’ve also experienced that certain types of pellets can make the pee smellier. So once you transition them to the timothy based pellet you were planning their pee might smell less.

                  @Wick Oh, okay. Thanks!

                  @DanaNM Thank you! Yeah their pellets are getting switched slowly right now. I’ve been spot cleaning the litter boxes everyday since I got them. It smells better once I clean them but one of my buns drinks a lot of water so he pees a lot.

                    I think since your rabbits are unbounded and just neutered, you will probably be having more stinky pee and poops now than you will in the future. When I tried to bond Thor, there was a definite uptick in number of smelly poops left around, even with all bunnies being spayed/neutered.

                    I spot clean the litter box once a day, since Thor only ever uses one or two corners. This is easy for me because I have a letterbox screen on which the poops and hay rest. I just dump the poops and old hay, scoop out the gross pellets and put in fresh pine pellets. I do a full dump rinse with vinegar every few weeks, depending on how gross it looks.

                    Some veggies can also really increase the amount of stinky pee or the volume. I’ve found that parsley in particular leads to a LOT of pee.

                      @ThorBunny Thanks for the info! 🙂 Yeah they just got neutered last week and I’ll be attempting to bond them eventually when their hormones are cooled down. Hopefully it will be less smelly within the next few weeks. Thanks!

                        I dump my rabbits’ litter boxes every other day, it’s the best way for me to know I’m not wasting too much, and by the third day their litter boxes will probably be very soiled, so every other day works great. My routine for litter boxes is dumping the litter boxes into garbage bags, then tossing the liners from the bottom into a separate bag. We sometimes put the litter box “mess” as compost, and then I sweep up all loose hay, wood shavings from toys and stuff, bunny hair, wool from the rug, etc into the bag with the litter box liners. By the end I have one bag of soon-to-be compost and then trash and sweepings from the floor. I do the sweeping and stuff on litter box days, and the system works pretty well. I deep clean the litter boxes maybe once a month or every 6-ish weeks by taking them outside and using the hose.

                          @Louiethebunny Thank you so much! I’m gonna try doing every other day too. Where do you put the bunnies when you’re cleaning? One of my bunnies hates when I touch stuff in his pen. I have to put him in the carrier to clean but it still makes him mad. I do the same with the other bunny just in case he’ll get mad too, but he doesn’t mind as much. It could just be that the hormones in them are still cooling off so they’re more territorial.

                            Currently, I just let each bun out for playtime, then clean their enclosures out. Hopefully they are bonded soon and can play together so it’s a little faster. I agree, sounds territorial, as well as the fact that they are new to your home, so their pen is their main space right now.

                              @Louiethebunny Yeah, that’s true. Today I put their veggies in the carrier so they would go in and can eat while I clean. Pinky didn’t get mad this time!
