I have a 4 month old Netherland dwarf rabbit named Baylor. I just got him yesterday and I have a few questions about his diet. Currently I have been giving him unlimited Timothy hay and water in a dish. I also give him Oxbow young rabbit pellets and am wondering if I should feed him unlimited pellets or should I measure out 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, or a few tablespoons? Should I mix his Timothy hay with alfalfa hay or just continue feeding him Timothy? Also, I’m planning to introduce veggies soon (starting with a small price of romaine) and will talk to my vet about it this week. If you have any tips I’d greatly appreciate them❤️

Young rabbits are instructed to be served “unlimited pellets”, but this often leads to them over-eating them and neglecting to eat hay, which is the most vital part of their diet. I think a few tablespoons to 1/4 cup of pellets presented for some time in the early morning, then taken away and re-presented in the evening, would be fine. The focus really needs to stay on hay, so having as much hay-only time as possible is helpful, but the pellets are needed to ensure proper growth!

Yes, unlimited doesn’t necessarily mean truly unlimited. The correct amount would be the maximum amount they can eat without compromising hay consumption. Wick made a good suggestion. You can take the pellets away during certain periods of the day to encourage more hay eating.
