I called and asked a farm feed store that’s about an hour away “what kinds of hay do you guys have?”. They said “a mix of a little bit of everything”. I replied “like what?”, they said “it’s best to come look for yourself”. Lol what? I guess I can look when I’m passing through but I’d like to know what kinds of hay they have. Is “a little bit of everything” good for rabbits? Lol

As long as it’s grass hay, it’s probably fine, however alfalfa is not good for adult rabbits.

LOL. They prob have a variety and were not paid enough to name them all. 😉  And yes, any grass hay is good for rabbits.

The nice thing is you don’t need to worry about transitioning between hays with bunnies like you do with their pellets if you switch types.

Where I live, all hay is a mix of various grasses. The call it “meadow hay” but its normally a mix of timothy, fescue, brome, orchard and several others. The thing to look out for if there is legume hay (alfalfa or clover) in the mix. You don’t want too much of that for adult rabbits, but its fine for young buns up to 6-7  months.

Here is a list of of various hays and their nutritional content:https://www.guinealynx.info/hay_chart.html

Its a guinea pig site, but guinea pigs and rabbits eat the same types of hay.

Thank you! To tell the difference when I see it, alfalfa and clover have leaves on the stems?

Its been a very long time since I bought alfalfa hay (Oxbow), so I dont really remember, it looked much like normal hay to me. Shorter strands and no seed heads. I think you will have to ask. But all other grasses in a mix are fine and a little bit of clover or alfalfa won’t be a problem.

One easiest way to identify alfalfa inside a mix of hay is the stems. When dried, the stems are very thin, round and almost stick-like. Leaves are often present as well. Alfalfa is trifoliolate, just like clover. They will be shriveled up, but they will look very different from grass leaves. Orchard and timothy are often flat and ribbon-like in appearance. Oat is usually coarser, sometimes with a straw-like appearance. Hopefully that helps.
