My boy is currently having oxbow orchard grass and timothy which is from a trusted supplier of hay. I am planning to buy another type of hay from oxbow and confused what to buy. Should I go for oat or botanical hay ? Any suggestions?

Either is completely fine! It’s great that you’re trying to incorporate a variety of hay.

My experience with oat hay for one of my rabbits is he seemed very enthusiastic about it, but I quickly realized he would only eat the seed heads and leave the actual hay alone. Oat hay has very attractive, robust seed heads and he did not seem interested in the hay itself. That was just my experience.

I have never tried botanical hay, but am always attracted to the purple coloring they use for its packaging, haha. According to the description, Botanical hay is actually just timothy hay with some flowery additions: “This enticing blend unites Western Timothy Hay with a rich array of three of the following fragrant herbs: chamomile, lemon verbena, hibiscus, lavender, rose hips, comfrey, borage or red clover blossoms.” … I imagine that might be very exciting for some buns.

Now I’m tempted to buy some botanical hay… I’ve never tried other hays with my buns, but I’m really tempted to start buying the Oxbow timothy+orchard hay mix. I’ll probably go to the store and buy a small bag of each and see what they prefer, because even though they both eat regular timothy hay like it’s the end of the world, something new might be fun too.

My boy loves orchard grass it also smells nice It was difficult to make him eats hay. It hasn’t been long that he has consistently eaten hay and now I want to introduce him new hays. I will probably go with oat hay since there has been many reviews that buns love it alot.

I can’t speak to the oat hay from Oxbow because I haven’t tried it, but my buns love the Binky Bunny oat hay (it comes in a tiny bale). They do eat all of it, but I only give them a small handful a day, in addition to timothy which is the bulk of their hay. So it is almost like a hay treat. 🙂 If I was giving them only oat I imagine they might be like Wick was saying and start only eating the seeds.
