Ever since I’ve had Bernard (almost three months) her urine has had lots of calcium. I’m not sure I would say it’s sludge because it’s not that much and not as thick. Also sometimes when she urinates only a little bit comes out. She doesn’t seem to be in pain. I heard cranberry juice in her water may help. But I read the container wrong, I thought it said 100% cranberry juice but instead it meant 100% juice with no sugar added. After looking at the ingredients it says it’s cranberry, grape, pear, and apple juice. Is it ok to give her?
I’m not too familiar with the cranberry juice thing, but the one you got sounds like it would be mostly sugar, so prob wouldn’t have the effect you’re going for. I’m sure she would like it, but it would just be sugar 😉
Can you post a pic of the possible sludge?

I just cleaned her cage but I’ll post a pic as soon as I can. The bottle does say no sugar added but on the back it says 29g, I’ll have to go back and get a different one. Also, she has never been one to drink water. I think I’ve seen her drink water only 5 times in the last 3 months. Maybe that’s why she only urinates a little?
Not to detract too much from your primary question, but what type of water vessel are you using, and how often do you find yourself refilling it and/or cleaning it? Over 3 months, I would hope you’d see her drink water more than 5 times.

I use a ceramic bowl. When I rescued her she was living outside in my backyard and I have no idea where she got water. I was thinking maybe she just got used to getting water from her veggies? I always put a lot of water on them before giving them to her. I did put a little juice from my watermelon today in her water and she drank it all down. After that her urine didn’t have any of the stuff I thought may be sludge.
Or maybe she is shy about drinking water in front of me? Most of the times I’ve seen her drink is when she couldn’t see me.
It may say no sugar added, but they get around this by using apple and grape juice as sweeteners, so it is still very high sugar. Straight cranberry juice is so tart that you wouldn’t enjoy drinking it straight.

If you find you are not refilling her water often, that’s a good indicator that she is not drinking a lot. Getting water from veggies can be a cause as well. I have two rabbits who have very different levels of water consumption, so it’s hard to provide what you should be looking for.
Hydration can be really important to ensure things the body is not using/wants to “flush out” get out efficiently. It doesn’t surprise me that her urine looked more normal when she had more water. In humans, it’s common to advise drinking a lot of water when you suspect having a UTI or something of that nature, because you want to assist your body in flushing out any bad bacteria/waste.

That’s good to know. Does anyone know of anything else I can put in her water that is healthy? I put a little juice in her water again yesterday (before I found out it was bad) and she drank it all again. Maybe I will soak some cucumbers in it overnight so it gets the flavor without all the sugar.
So far there still isn’t any sludge in her urine, so fingers crossed it can be fixed with water 🙂
She also might not drink very much because she isn’t a great hay eater. Hopefully with more hay she will drink more water. And putting a tiny amount of juice to get her to drink is probably OK, especially with the sludge concerns. You might also try making mint or hay tea for her.

Hi there! I have two rabbits, and my male who I adopted a few months ago would barely drink water when I first got him. Turns out he didn’t like tap water, so when I started giving him water that had been sitting out and refrigerated or water from our fridge, he would enjoy it and I began to notice him drinking more. Since then I have been working on getting him to drink tap water, because it’s less of a hassle to give him, so maybe your bun is super picky with water? Another way I tried to get more water into Louie was by brewing some mint tea. It’s a tea that is made of only dried mint leaves, so I would make some light tea and Louie would try it. It doesn’t have sugar, as opposed to juices, so maybe its worth a shot?
@DanaNM
She actually makes her own hay tea, but she won’t drink it. She would deliberately pick up the hay I give her and put it in her water dish. I think that’s just one of her little quirks 😂 The mint tea idea is great, I grow mint in my backyard and she loves it. I have been exclusively giving her filtered water just because it’s easier but maybe I’ll try tap.
This is off topic but I’ve seen pictures you’ve posted of Louie and he is absolutely adorable! I love his shade of brown 🙂
thank you! I love the photo of your bun in your profile photo!
Thank you! She would definitely agree with you 😁
