Ugh I feel like a horrible bunny parent, but Dorian kicked just as I was trimming his nail and ended up getting the quick. He now has a bloody little paw and is pouting. Is there anything I should do to make sure no issues.

It’s ok, everyone makes mistakes with their bunnies. I would get out some styptic powder, which I have on hand, but flour works in a pinch too.

I don’t have styptic powder, thought I did but can’t find any. And yeah just did it. Went to clean his paw and he has already washed it all off. I’ll go see if I can dab flour on it. Ugh, poor little Dorian. I could also run to pharmacy for styptic powder, but not sure I should leave him?

it may be the best solution just go nip down to the pharmacy

He seems to have stopped bleeding, I can’t really get him to let me look at his paw closely, but I was able to set it on a tissue and it’s not leaving any blood. I think the styptic is just to stop bleeding right? He is currently running through his tunnels and doesn’t seem to be hurting. I’ll definitely pick some up for the next attempt, but not sure it makes sense to do so anymore.

I just read this on bunnylady which looks like a good website:

“If you accidentally clip into the quick and the rabbit’s nail starts to bleed, you can use a cotton ball with a little flour or cornstarch to help stop the bleeding. Press the cotton ball against the nail for a couple minutes. After the blood has stopped flowing, allow your rabbit to go free. They will lick their nail to clean the ‘wound’ and then continue hopping around like normal.”

He’s already doing the hop around. I am hoping it was just the very tip of the quick, I  did the tap tap, but the last minute squirm/kick must of moved it further down.

Now to clean up the blood on me. Thanks for the responses.

It most likely was, nobody really clips down far enough to be very deep into the quick. Even if he kicked, I bet it was just a little part. Yes, styptic powder is just to help stop the bleeding. If Dorian is still hopping around, I’m sure he’s fine, especially because he stopped bleeding.

Thanks @Louiethebunny, that helps to hear !  He was doing binkies and came up and gave me licks so seems fine and like all is forgiven on his side (I still feel bad about it). The bleeding has definitely stopped too as he was on a pale blanket grooming for a bit, and I didn’t see anything. How dramatic, at least I think I got the front paws all done. I’ll make sure I have more styptic powder, and put it in his emergency box. Looks like cornstarch will work too.

                                Rabbits ARE very forgiving 😉

I doubt it’s possible to have pets for a longer period of time and never happen to cut into the quick of a nail at one time or other. Especially if the pet has dark nails, as most have. It does make you feel like a horrible person, and it can look pretty dramatic, but it is more or less par for the course. If you nip down to the pet store to get styptic powder, the bleeding will most likely have stopped before you get back.

Thanks @Bam it stopped pretty quick, I think before he even left my lap… but white paw made it all so much worse looking. This was one of his clear nails so I was especially mad at myself, but I’ll maybe look into the towel wrap method or such next time. He is such a dramatic little bun with nail clips, really wish taking him to the vet was more of an option right now.
