So I live in the PNW and our hot days are pretty limited so no air conditioning, however it’s gotten pretty warm the last few days. I tried the iced water bottle in a cloth… he ignored it. He has tile floor to lay on… he isn’t. Instead he is hopping about and snuggling in his warm nest. Should I be worried or just trust him to maintain his own temp if he has options? He is drinking a decent amount of water.

I live in the PNW too! Today is so hot, there’s a warning that it’s almost 90-something degrees, whew. If he is hot, he probably would do something about it. For Louie, I place a sheet over his xpen so it’s more shady and cool, offer him lots of water, and give him a tile to hang out on, and he seems fine. If Prince Dorian isn’t doing anything at all or seems extra stressed or has any type of heavy panting, then I would intervene, but if he isn’t showing any signs of over heating at all, he is probably okay for the time being.

yeah it’s crazy hot here today (PNW speaking 😀 ).  He has option to go outside on the deck (shaded and more breeze) and his room is actually the coolest in the apartment. It’s an odd spare bathroom, so he can lay on the shower tile as I removed the mat. He doesn’t seem panty or upset, his ears actually felt coolish. He seems to be dealing with it better than me.

Haha I live in MT and I bought an AC for my buns, but I also have south facing windows and it gets very hot in here for like 20 days or more a year. It’s really a short season here too. I would think he’d go to the bottle or cool time if he felt hot though! Just try to keep the house as cool as you can. Blackout curtains over south facing windows, open them at night when it’s cooler if that’s an option where you live.

@pinkiemarie, here it’s generally maybe a week or two, so never felt justified to get AC… until that week happens 😀

and he was outside on the sunniest part of the deck all flopped out, though finally convinced him to come inside closer to the fan.

and he’s back outside. Ah well. I guess I will stop worrying

It is definitely worth digging into for legitimacy, but I try to think of cooling techniques that require some sort of water evaporation for rabbits, in addition to the ideal “cool the entire space they’re in”. The reason fans work for humans is because it cools the sweat off our skin and we get that sensation– rabbits do not sweat, to my understanding really, so they may not get much benefit from a plain fan (I also acknowledge “fan” could just be a way of saying AC; just wanted to mention this!).

A big help can also be grooming him to get any excess fur off as well!

Sometimes it takes them a while to realize the frozen bottles are actually nice. Some buns prefer them wrapped in a towel so they aren’t wet with condensation. Even if they don’t lay directly next to them, they cool down the floor at least. Frozen tiles are also popular with my buns.

I will also dampen their ears a bit to help their own cooling system work (I usually just dip my fingers in their water bowl then pet their ears).

You can also make a makeshift “swamp cooler” my hanging a damp piece of cloth in front of the fan, such as a thin scarf. As the water evaporates it cools the air. This doesn’t work very well if you are in a humid climate though!

Thanks for the suggestions @wick and @DanaNM !

It’s cooled down a bit, but I have the bottle in the freezer on the ready. I did lightly wet his ears a bit when he seemed especially hot. He has been hanging out outside a lot (he can access the deck as part of his free roam), though not right now as the construction across the street is driving us all batty.  He’s in his room and the temp there is about 75F

Generally buns do OK without too much cooling help until it gets above 80 F. But of course things are relative… I can tell you’re in the PNW since 75 F seems warm to you!

Ha! It’s true I am such a wimp when it comes to heat. To be fair,  it was actually up to 90F the other day, mid 80s in the house when I was a bit worried for Dorian. He seemed less affected than me to be honest. Today’s what I would call perfect summer weather, though Dorian has decided today is lounge in bed day. Probably all the construction noise is not helping.

Oh yes, 90 is hot! No one has AC in my region either so we all turn into big babies when it gets into the mid- 80s!

I’m in the PNW too, and yesterday was soo hot, here it was 90-91 degrees F too. I sprayed down the sheet I cover Louie’s xpen with so the entire area underneath was nice and cooled down.
