  I have seen lots of things about looking out for smaller than usual poos and not enough poos, but cleaning out Dorian’s litter this batch was bigger than usual and there were a lot. He is mid molt, and he had a few days back a few hours where he didn’t have a huge appetite and didn’t have a lot of pellets in the morning, but after he passed a couple double poos he was normal the rest of the day. I have been brushing him as much as I can get him to put up with and he had been back to normal the last two days, he just went from not really shedding to let me create a bun out of my own fluff just from my right cheek level of shed overnight. He seems over the worst of the molt at this stage, no more chain poops…. they are just big! and also a bit fragile in the sense that a few didn’t keep their shape, like they were more puffy. Only thing I could think of is he did get a double dose of pellets do to him telling sad tales of being oooohhhhh sooooo hungry, but given he usually get’s 1/8 a cup and I am not super strict on that amount as long as it doesn’t go above 1/4 cup, I am not sure that was it? He hadn’t had any new to him greens. He seems fine, other than a bit jumpy which he seems to get when he molts. Is this something to worry about?

  Double poops are formed when 2 normal poops collide inside the gut. This suggests the gut has slowed a bit, which isn’t surprising considering he is going through such an awful molt.

  Thanks! I looked through the thread, these aren’t like the double poops as they are very round (gah I never thought I would be typing poo so much today 😀 ), he may have had one of those in his earlier when he first hit his molt and had his linked by hair poops. Reading that page I thought maybe the protein issue, but they really just look like the larger of the healthy poos, where he is usually more between those examples. Could it be he was backed up a bit and now they are making up for lost time so to speak? He is finally at the stage of his molt where I have to comb him for a bit before his comb is full of fluff, I spent last couple days just combing and plucking any time I could get him to cooperate. I guess I keep and eye and see what he leaves me tonight!

  Too big poop that is well-formed doesnt seem worrisome, unless they’re full of hair? That they crumble easily means they’re dry and full of fiber, you often see that with buns that eat lots of hay. It’s not considered a bad thing. You could serve him his greens dripping wet for extra moisture. Moisture is important for smooth passage through the GI canal and that’s extra important during molting.

  I also immediately wondered if these are simply poops with fur inside them. It seems gross, but if you crack one open, you might find a lump of fur inside. It is a common cause of larger poops during a molt.

  no fur inside, just hay from what I can tell. They crumbled pretty easy. He has had a larger than usual appetite last two days, maybe that is all it is. The quantity was less startling this morning, more his usual amount. I think I am not going to worry given that he seems pretty content. He had a blast yesterday evening doing bunny 500s around the living room… well more like bunny pinball as he seems to like to ricochet of everything even if there is plenty of space for him not to. Only off thing was bedtime was pretty fuss free as he ran at the sound of me putting his greens bowl down, usually there is a little more cajoling/bribery to get him in his room or at least waiting for the sound of pellets in his bowl. As I said he really seems hungrier than usual.
