        Hello,

I came into my rabbits cage today and saw blood on the floor. It looks like she may have had an accident while we were sleeping. She is acting normal and by the patterns I think it’s one of her back feet.

Would I be okay to keep an eye on it before bringing her to the vet? Due to Coronavirus our vet is still being extremely cautious so i would have to leave her for the day.

Check her nails, she might have broken one. Also check her toes if you find a broken nail. Check for swelling. Is she putting weight on all four feet? A broken nail is not a vet emergency unless there are signs of something more going on.

I assume you are aware that rabbit pee can be red. Sometimes new rabbit owners mistake red pee (which is normal) for blood. Just making sure this is not what is going on here! 🙂

She’s quite clumsy so I wouldn’t rule out anything. She seems to be exactly as she normally would. My boyfriend said he didn’t even notice the blood until I pointed it out so it is either from this morning when we went into the cage to greet her or from last night.

She’s eating and is running around like normal. She doesn’t seem to be favouring any foot. It does look like one may be uncomfortable but not so much she’s not putting any pressure on it.

It would be good to lift her up to check the nails. Maybe your boyfriend could hold her in his lap, so you can have look and feel over the nails? Some buns are prone to breaking nails, especially if the nails have become a bit long. If it was just very little blood my guess would be a broken nail, but theres no way to know for sure without a proper look.

Once I noticed the blood we tried looking at her feet but she didn’t seem to have a lot of blood anywhere which makes me think it was in the evening. She has let me touch the tops of her feet and I couldn’t really tell if it was a broken nail. I am more worried it’s a cut on her foot. I’ve tried lifting her up but at the moment she’s not too keen to be held which is slights concerning me as she is usually all about the cuddles. I am going to do a thorough clean of her cage this evening and take a closer look in there. It looked like a conceding amount of blood but it actually just looks like some was smeared in her favourite lay down spot.

She is still licking me and eating but I do think she’s uncomfortable so if she doesn’t get her energy back by the end of the evening I’ll likely call the vet tomorrow and see what he thinks.

If she seems uncomfortable, a call to vet is of  course the best thing. How old is your rabbit? There are instances when f ex a bad UTI can lead to blood in the urine.

She’s a year and a couple months. She the blood was definitely not from pee. She uses her litter box and I have checked in there, as well as all over her cage.

I have tried checking her feet and she is reluctant to let me near them so I’m thinking it’s one of the back feet. I will give our vet a ring in the morning. She escaped her cage today and was running around like crazy with no issues so I don’t think it’s causing her a whole lot of pain, just a little discomfort.

A broken toenail is painful, but most bunnies seem to shake it off pretty quickly. I really would try to take a look at it though, just to make sure only the nail was broken. If you’re not comfortable doing it and able to take her to a vet, you could have a vet take a look. Keep in mind, if it is just a broken nail, not much can be done for it (other than making sure it’s clean).

Infections are possible, but not common. What typically happens is the blood flushes any bacteria out of the wound, the blood clots, and then it heals. Depending on where the tear was, the nail may or may not grow back.

I agree that if he’s showing unusual behavior she could be in pain and a vet visit might be in order. Is she spayed?

The weirdness may be due to a change in pattern now that back I’m in work and not spending hours cuddling her during the day. We currently have her out running around and she’s done quite a few full sprint binkies so I’m thinking she’s likely quite good.
