My bunny has been doing this thing for a while when he drinks water. He’ll stop, then start sneezing up water. He just did it a few minutes ago and I could hear the water trying to come out, like a gurgling noise. It seems to happen when I refill his water, like he’s really excited to drink it. I’m thinking maybe he just gets too excited and he ends up breathing it up through his nose? I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t know when we’ll be able to get to a vet next because of Covid-19, and I don’t know how serious of a problem this is. He always manages to get the water out, but I don’t know how I could help him if he can’t next time. Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do to help?

It might be helpful to see what water level/bowl height works best to prevent that. Depending on your rabbit’s nose size/snout length, that’ll vary. Both my netherland dwarf and american sable use the same bowl. My dwarf always gets so wet while my american sable uses it very neatly. Can you provide a picture of the bowl versus his size?

I agree with both raising bowl and not to filling right to the top if he’s mostly doing this after you refill it. He might be sticking nose in too far, not gauging the depth properly, or just drinking too fast.

One of my rabbits does a gag-cough when he drinks sometimes. So I know it looks worriesome! He always seems fine after these episodes are over.

I’ve always preferred bowls personally but you could get him onto a sipper bottle if it continues and worries you.

That’s a great point, I hadn’t thought of that. His bowl is directly on the ground and he seems to have to stretch pretty far down to get to it. I’ll try switching to a bowl with a stand so it’s easier for him 🙂 Thank you!

Onix will sometimes do this and make a loud hacking cough sound like it’s gone down the wrong pipe. I know I shouldn’t but it makes me laugh so much because he will just go straight back to inhaling his water like he hasn’t drank for a month.
