So my bunny is currently almost 5 months old and she needs to get spayed soon. The only issue is that I am moving to LA this summer. I am trying to figure out if I should get her spayed a little early (vet said 5 months will be fine) and let her heal and then move to LA. Or if i should move to LA, let her get settled in and feel at home, and then get her spayed at 6 months. If I get her spayed early she will be at home comfortable to recover, but then have to endure a flight, and complete change of environment. But if I get her spayed in LA, I won’t be as familiar with the vets, and she will have to recover in an unfamiliar environment. I can move whenever, so it’s really just what is best for her. What should I do?

With spaying I think I personally would probably wait? You wouldn’t even need to rush to spay right at 6 months, so could spend a bit of time letting her get settled in and finding a good vet etc?

I guess the exception to that would be if you absolutely love your current vet and trust them 100%… But LA has an abundance of exotics vets so I think you will be fine to find a new one.

That makes sense. I would like her to be spayed before I go back to classes in late august so i can be with her to recover. How long is the recovery, like fully back to normal nothing can go wrong?

Just to add a bit more info (not to complicate things), I checked with my vet and he does spay between 4-6 months, but bases it mostly on weight, so they have to be over 2 lbs.

I believe the standard is to limit exercise for 7- 10 days post-spay, so I would imagine she would be pretty much back to normal after that.

Here’s a good resource about what to expect before and after spaying: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/opcare.html

I agree with Dana. Nothing wrong with waiting a little longer.
