I have a four month old bunny and I took her to the vet to get checked up on and to make her appointment to get spayed. Up to this point I had made up my mind to get it done. While there we found out she has a respiratory infection and a heart murmur. The assistant said it’s rare for baby bunnies to have heart murmurs and that she could grow out of it. But didn’t seem too concerned with it being a problem for her to have the surgery. I’m worried though. I know it’s a quality of life issue for girls but with the heart murmur I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if something went wrong. Any suggestions?

          Hi there,

Sorry no one has replied yet!  Four months is young for a spay. I think if I was in your shoes I would wait a while. I think most vets prefer to spay at 6-9 months, so you could wait at least until then and see if her murmur goes away. I don’t think there would be any harm in even waiting until she was a year or so.

I agree with Dana that waiting a month or two would most likely be harmless. It may ensure she is fully developed enough for an effective spay and give her body a chance to become more resilient, regardless of a heart murmur or not.

I was thinking that too. They seemed very pushy about getting it done soon but I can’t see that going well. She’s so small and sweet. She was actually the runt so when I got her and she didn’t want to be around the other bunnies which I thought was great because she’s a solo bun anyway. Now she rules my house and cant even think about adding a two week recovery to her already fragile heart. This makes me feel better about my decision. It’s so hard when it’s for her good but I also don’t want to cause harm. Thank you for commenting back!

Odd that the vet is being pushy about it… I guess they just want to make sure it gets done, but she is still very young! Just to make sure you want to go with that vet, I would ask them how many rabbit spays they do and what their success rate is. The spay procedure is more invasive than neutering so it’s important to find a vet that does lots of them.
