My rabbit had one of her nails fall off today. There was little to no blood at the time the nail fell off but it did have a little bit of blood after she was cleaning it like crazy. She is definitely in a little bit of discomfort, she’s cleaning herself a lot, but she is still eating and acting like herself, by that I mean flopping almost upside down and spilling her water bowl all over her cage.

Due to the pandemic my vet is only taking emergencies. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make sure it doesn’t get infected? Also, does anyone have any explanations on what might have happened?

I think perhaps the nail was “dead” after a break that wasnt all the way through or occured above the skin-line, some time ago. These things happen, especially with active buns.

Just keep an eye on the foot the nail fell off from. If you see swelling, if you see the bun paying too much attention to the foot (licking, biting etc), or if you see limping, etc, then its more of a thing for a vet to take a look at.

Hopefully this will just heal of itself with no complications. A new nail that grows out may be crooked, though. I had a bun with a crooked nail, it always grew so it curled upwards. He never seemed bothered by it though.

            Hi! Thanks so much.

It seems like that is likely the case. The nail itself was  cracked so it could have just taken a while to fall off.

She is completely fine. Nothing seems to have changed and she’s letting me touch the foot so I’ll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get infected. She is currently running around like crazy so I think she’ll be just fine.
