Hi! I just got back from the vet with Ollie a little while ago and the vet is confident that it is still the fungal infection (ringworm) persisting on Ollie’s ears, so she went ahead and prescribed an oral antibiotic to be given daily for the next 30 days and then he will be brought back to the vet for a recheck after that, hopefully with no more visible signs of any fungus!

The specific medication is: Griseofulvin / 0.65ml dosage

Has anyone ever had any experience with this? A quick google search shows me that it’s commonly prescribed to rabbits as an antifungal, but I just want to check here on the forums as well. Thanks in advance for any input!

No experience unfortunately. You’ve read my post re: Wick’s ringworm, so I am only familiar with itraconazole oral medication for fungal treatment. I concur with what you found, which is that this is safe for use with rabbits and it is considered the “best treatment” for fungal infections, according to Medirabbit. …. I’m curious about the clause for wearing gloves during administration. Is this something your vet mentioned?

“The best treatment for fungal dermatitis is oral administration of griseofulvin (25-50 mg/kg PO q24h or divided q12h). (Wear gloves while administering this drug). The treatment should continue two weeks after the disappearance of the clinical signs.” – Medirabbit

I also will highlight what this says an emphasize that treatment should go on longer, even when you don’t see clinical signs. Sometimes, vets end medication too early and the infection comes back (sometimes harder than the first time!), so make sure that if you’re seeing improvements, keep the regimen going.

Hi @Wick – thank you for the response! The vet didn’t mention anything about wearing gloves, so we have not been doing that when giving him the medication – oops! I will mention that to them when they call to see how he is doing.

Ollie’s been given the medication for a few days now and seems to be taking it well – still eating, drinking, & pooping normally, I am so thankful, but of course, I will continue to monitor him, as usual! He also has gotten used to the process as he takes the feeding syringe in his mouth like a champ now!!!

The vet mentioned that we are able to get more of the griseofulvin and the probiotic powder if we need to, so that’s good as well. We’ll keep giving it to him even if the physical signs of the infection are gone. Also, It seems like he is not itching the area as much as before, so that makes me happy to see.

I am glad that I’m able to chat with you as I know you have a lot of experience with this type of infection! Plus your Wick looks similar to Ollie if I remember correctly, I think they’re both Nethies? Anyway, thank you again for the input!
