Hello I’m a first time poster 🙂 I have 2 beautiful bunnies… my bunnies live separately  because of litter  training issues .. wich is an entirely different story.. and they still have separate living quarters however recently I have noticed binki has had very goopy eyes and is making grunting sounds when he hops around.  I called my vet imidiatly because obviously my baby was not well .. he says its nothing to panic about but I have booked an appointment for them both tomorrow to  be checkd out.. I just feel so helpless right now .. I sat here for an hour with binki on my lap cleaning his goopy eye. He does not seem to  be bothered he is still hoping around and eating and enjoying his everyday life… the only thing that is wrong is his eye and even then seems to be  bothering me more then it is bothering him … should I be worried .. I have terrible anxiety and am really freaking out .. the bet said I can come and pick up eye drops for him right now but I dont have a car at the moment…

          Hi there, welcome 🙂

          Can you post a picture?

Also, how old is he? The grunting and hopping around might be male hormones kicking in if he is puberty-aged (and sounds probably unrelated to the eye).

He is a year old and he is fixed… he just woke up now and it’s all gunky again. Its not so much as a grunting more like a hmm hmm hmmm when he hops but its lower and sounds like a grunt if that makes any sense.. my other rabbit I thought had the sniffles back in November and she too was making these sounds but the vet said she was ok so I just took it as her beeing happy and greeting me … but now I’m worried that maybe she did have the sniffles and now she has given them to him .. but that was months ago.. the vet said it sounded like it was an eye infection but I needed to bring him in for sure.. so I have an appointment tomorrow.. but i also  asked if I  could bring her in too just to be safe..

The noise sounds like “honking”, my Bun Jovi does that when he’s trying to mount or when he’s excited about pellets. Females do it too sometimes when they are excited.

I’m sure the vet visit will clear things up. 🙂 Have them check teeth. Sometimes dental issues can manifest as eye issues.

Optixcare is just a lubricating eye drop. So your bunny didn’t see the vet? A thick, goopy discharge suggests something is going on in the sinus and/or tear duct. I would be worried about a bacterial infection. These types of infections are treated with antibiotics. The vet needs to look at them to determine what the cause of the discharge it, whether it’s an infection or something else.

OK, good to know. You will have to keep us updated. I’m not horribly familiar with Optixcare, but I don’t think it will cause burning. Even with an infection, some bunnies are still very active. Obviously, this isn’t an emergency. We just wouldn’t want this to fester too long and become worse.

Hi there, glad the drops helped overnight and that he’ll see a vet today. Make sure they check the teeth! My mini rex years ago had thick discharge on one eye and the vet determined that it was a retrobulbar disease caused by a back tooth growing into her tear duct and then got infected probably due to hay dust and scratching. It was an easy solution all in all but they removed a tooth and she had a draining tube on her cheek for a week or so.

                              Best of luck!

The last time I took him his teeth were doing really good … I really hope it’s not his teeth .. 🙁 I love him so much and he is only a year old .. I would give up the world for him.  I’m off work right now so I’m hoping this does not cost too much

Well everyone here is an update for a binky and Oreo as you know Binky was experiencing some goop in his right eye I reached out to you guys for some reassurance and expertise opinions on how to soothe his pain before I could take him to the vet. I was very happy with the amount of responses that I got thank you very much if I haven’t thanked you already. It turned out that Binky may have got a piece of hay stuck in his eye or something but it is not infected and the drops that he received seem to have been helping so I’m going to continue to give him those drops and the vet said that he has a clean bill of health.

I also had the opportunity of bringing in my female bunny as well she is a bunny that I rescued back in August since I’ve had her I have always thought that she’s had some health issues and have been having conversations with the vet about her back in October he told me that she had a clean bill of health when he Spade her however recently we’ve noticed that her breathing has become very raspy and that she snores and I thought that was abnormal so I was concerned about upper respiratory infection it turns out that she does have an upper respiratory infection infection but along with that she also has a UTI so the vet has prescribed me some medications for those things and after she has completed that I have to bring her back for her checkup and he is going to sedate and trim her teeth :).

Has anyone used feline pvd fortilfora before ? This is the probiotic to help with her digestive system while she is on baytril 5%. Does anyone have any experience with these medications ?

Thank you for the update! I’m glad to hear Binky’s eye wasn’t anything serious. I would monitor it to make sure it continues to improve. If it was simply something stuck in there that was causing irritation, the eye drops may have been enough to flush it out. As for Oreo, I’m glad she went to the vet with Binky. You had stated you thought there was a problem before so it’s good that your suspicions have been confirmed. With antibiotics, her infections should clear up.

As for the feline probiotic, I would advise against using it. A probiotic is fine and can help a bunny on an antibiotic replenish their gut flora. But the feline probiotics are often flavored with liver, which isn’t appropriate for a rabbit.

                                      What antibiotic were you given?

The medication is baytril 5% and he said that even though it was for  cats it was safe lol my vet knows I’m cautious and goggles everything as well. I will definitely check the probiotic for tuna flavorings thanks for the heads up .. do you know of anything else I can give her for a probiotic??

There are several brands out there, but Fibreplex seems to be the most popular on the forum (if you can find it).

Fibreplex is good, Benebac is good too. I myself use Synbiotic D-C. If I had to use fortilflora I’d rather go with the dog type than the cat type. Feline fortilflora has the right type of bacteria (enterococcus faecium), but it also has taurine. Both the cat and the dog variety contain meat and meat by-products.

Very glad to hear Binky’s eye problem seems to be resolved!
