I recently got 2 blue mini lop brother and sister bunnies, i have had them since they were 8 week old they are now reaching 10 weeks. I plan to get the them neutered and spayed when they are old enough. They have a 2 tier hutch and the run of the garden most of they day(supervised) i split them up a few days ago after hearing how early bunnies can get pregnant, the girl bunny was absolutely fine eating usual behaviour but they boy just stayed in his bed and did not move, i went out to give him breakfast, never had a problem eating but would not eat, i dont even think he had any water! So we put them back together and after a couple of hours he was fine again! Eating drinking running around! Just want some advise as we are surely going to have to separate them soon? These are my first rabbits so to be honest i am completely clueless, i have read loads up online but they are just saying different things, please help?

Hi there, welcome! Sorry the forum is still being worked on so you may not get as many replies.

You did the right thing by separating, but it does sound like the male was somewhat depressed. Can you separate them in such a way that they can see each other but can’t get too close to one another? I have heard of males being able to impregnate females through cage walls, but having them within sight but not able to contact each other should help.

You should plan to spend extra time with the male, and monitor him to make sure he doesn’t need to be syringe fed or anything. Normally you don’t want to split up truly bonded bunnies, but babies do not truly bond, so he might just need a little extra TLC in the transition.

Hi, well we put them back together now the vet said too, she said the bunny wont be able to get pregnant until 5 month at least, is this correct? Ive spoke to the vet today and she said i wont be able to get hops(male) neutered until he is 16 weeks old so she said they will be ok until then? Im hearing such different things i dont know whats facts and whats not! They currently share a 2 tier hutch which is spacious as they are only small but in the future i do want separate hutches for them so they have there own space! So i am worried about the male as on the day we separated them we had to go to the vets for sachets, but as soon as we put them together he was happy! Will he be any better in a couple of weeks when he is more settled? He wont let me give him tlc he just runs off and wont let us pick him up! I just want to cuddle him but he wont let me:(

Omg i have just caught the boy mounting the girl twice! She ran off so i have put the board over the stairs left the girl at top and boy at bottom! I am so worried i hope he does not get upset again, he has noticed he cant get up and still sat munching on his hay but i think its the night time when he is going to realise he is on his own, am i doing the right thing? The only thing i have right nowt to separate them is a board of wood which is velcroed down so one has upstairs and one has downstairs, struggling to get anything else with the lockdown going on! Am i doing this right??

I’m sorry but your vet is incorrect. Please separate them (he may have already impregnated her but hopefully now). If he is old enough to be neutered he will be old enough to impregnate her.  Hormones can also cause fights to break out and serious injuries can occur, which will make it harder to bond them in the future. Your male is already hormonal so he needs to be kept away from her for sure.

I have done now! Even if she cant get pregnant yet still dont want him bothering her. They seem to be ok eating and drinking i am just going to keep switching toys, beds so they can still smell each other so hopefully when they have been done they will be best friends again! Although the vets wont do it until he is 16 weeks so thats another 6 weeks then were going to have to leave them separated for weeks when he has had it done so its going to more that 2 months apart i am really hoping they bond back together well:(

That’s great you split them up and they seem to be coping well! And don’t worry, as long as they can see and smell each other they won’t forget. 🙂

You can also turn him over and see if his testicles dropped. It usually happens between 3-4 months. Rabbits also hump for dominance, but DanaNM is right, best safe than sorry. I have a 3 month old Holland lop myself. I checked this morning and his boys have still not descended. Some vets will neuter just as soon as they do.

Can you do some kind of double separater? Like two x pens but keep them a foot apart so no funny business can happen… That way they could still see and smell each other. That might not be possible but it might help with your boy’s separation anxiety if you can!

We did check beau bunny but we cant see anything as yet! But we have separated just incase i keep swapping bedding litter trays and the boy seems to be absolutely fine has also put some weight on which is good! They see each other when they play out because like you said pinkimarie we have 2 x pens so they can see each other they both seem to be happy just cant wait until i can put them bag together! Also could i ask about females and litter training? She has a corner she wee’s in (not the litter tray) so i put the litter tray were she does and now shel just do it some were else! I move the wet newspaper into the litter tray but shes still not getting it! The boy has got the weeing in the litter tray but they both just poo absolutely everywhere is this normal?

Pee and poop wars are pretty normal until they are spayed/neutered (and babies in general).  What is the litter box and set-up like? How big is the litter box? Sometimes a larger litter box helps (those corner boxes especially are too small). The newspaper could be confusing her a bit as well.

*Edit: I just realized we had been chatting in another thread about the cage set up! My comments above still apply, but I think it will take some time for them to sort out where to go since you had shavings around everywhere. If possible to remove the newspaper, that will help too, but not sure what your flooring is?

Yes it is a large litter box, i have wood flooring i thought the newspaper would just be abit of protection on their feet and add abit of warmth its not freezing out but it is chilly on a night but i have taken the saw dust away now because i dont want to harm them! So i just have newspaper down and a pile of straw for the bed and in the litter tray the wood pellets and a layer of hay like you advised    and have there hay feeder just next to the litter tray so there more likely to poo and wee while their eating

You talked about getting each of them their own hutch at some point, I just wanted to mention that once they’re bonded, they should be housed together at all times. 🙂

Don’t feel bad about the boy not wanting to be picked up/cuddled. Since he’s hitting puberty his mood will be all over the place. However, don’t expect him to revert back to his cuddly self once he’s neutered. Most adult rabbits don’t enjoy being picked up, and usually only accept affection on their own terms.
