Hello to all. I would like to ask your opinion about a matter that came up today and really causes me extreme stress and sadness. While i was petting my bunny i accidentally found a round skin colored growth between her front hand and her neck. Basically its where her armpit is. It doesnt seem to bother her at all and i dont know from when she had it since it cannot be seen or be found easily. She is a long haired bunny. The growth looks like a wart and it seems to be only above the skin it doesnt have any root or lump on the base.I have spoken with two different vets(unfortunately there are no vets specialized in bunnies in my country) and they told me two different opinions. The one told me that he doesnt believe is something malignant and that i need to check it regularly to see if it changes and if it does, then to speak again and choose whether or not to remove it. The other vet told me that since he cannot know what it is,it is needed to be removed asap. Now what really stress me is the fact that my bunny has a really sensitive stomach since she was a baby. Several times she suffered gi stasis and she cannot handle antibiotics at all. She is really precious for me she is a true family and i love her unconditionally. I am very much afraid that if i will take the chance to remove it, she will possibly have complications from the post operation therapy and die. Right now she is super happy and healthy and i cant stand the thought of losing her. I would really appreciate it if anyone of you have seen any similar growth and what is your opinion about it. Im in a lot of panic.Thank you in advance for your time and sorry for the long post.

You can see the growth in a zoomed photo here

It’s hard to know for sure, but it does look like a papilloma in the photo. Most are benign, but a small percentage can become malignant. If that is what this is, then I imagine that is why the first vet told you to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t change.

Thank you so much for your reply !! Is papilloma a dangerous illness for my bunny ?? I will be keeping an eye on it everyday and check if it is changening. Until now it is exactly the same. If it is changing should i take her for an operation?? Thank you again for your reply ❤

Generally, no… sometimes the growth will even regress on it’s own. But there is the small risk of it becoming malignant. If it doesn’t go away on its own and you decide to have it removed, it’s probably something that can be done later on down the road. If it were to become cancerous, it would take some time to do so. I could post a link to an article on papillomas, but it’s pretty graphic.

Thank you for once again so much for your reply. I am more calm now cause as soon as i found the growth i was in a panic for my baby. I will keep an eye on her everyday and i really wish and hope that it will either remain the same or regress on its own. At this point it doesnt seem to bother her at all. She is her usual happy self. I would defiinitely like to see the link for papillomas. I really wish you all the best ❤

I have had bunnies who have benign growths and another more recently where the growth was very fast and it was cancerous.  I agree that keeping an eye on it would be a good way to go.  You could measure it now and then measure again in a week.   The growth that my bunny had grew larger within days, so it was very aggressive and hard to miss.  Looks like you have spotted this when it is small and that good.   Your bunny is lucky to have such a caring human.   Keep us updated.

That’s a good point BB. If it grows quickly or there are other changes, then removing it would definitely be more urgent.

Thank you so much for all your help and replies. I will definitely keep an eye on it and checking and measuring it everyday. It has been one week since the day i noticed it on my baby and thankfully it is exactly the same. I hope everything will be under control. She is a very sensitive bunny and an operation would be a risk for her. I have adopted my bunny 6 years ago from a pet shop here in my country where i have found her extremely neglected and in bad condition. The past owners returned her to the pet shop owner in a bad state and he was giving her for free to anyone who might wanted to help her. She was 6 months at the time. She was full of urine and a messy butt, she had problems with her teeth and we made an operarion for that, and her past owners where feeding her mostly carrots since the time she was a baby. So this caused her a very sensitive stomach and she is very vulnerable to antibiotics. She is a ruby eyed white lionhead and since she has heavy shedding this month my worries of the growth got even larger cause in case of an operation she will be at even more risk due to her sensitive stomach. I have no words to express how thankful i am for all of your help and replies. I will keep an eye on her and i will keep you informed of any updates. Here in my country there are no exotic vets and this forum has always been my rescue and support for several matters that worried me about my bunny. Thank you so much !!
