Last week I posted that I took my male rabbit to the vet because he had dandruff flakes on his neck and behind his ears, and had balding. The vet looked at him and did not think it was mites. She couldn’t find any sores or any indication that it was mites. She gave me revolution to put on him just in case. I went head and put a dose on him, and a week later he now has patches of dandruff. If I rub my finger on it, it flakes off just like dandruff. It kinda reminds me of the type of dandruff I get on my head, I get seborrheic dermatitis which is thick patches of dandruff. His issue reminds me exactly of that just no redness and it’s easy to flake off. He has no sores, no redness, no itching, just flakes and balding.

I spent a lot of money at the vet last week and I don’t think it’s mites because my other rabbit is perfectly fine. I was wondering if any one has any idea of what this could be or has seen their rabbits have this before. I know no one can give me a define answer on here, but any ideas would be helpful.

          Is he molting?

He has been stuck in this molt. He started molting in January and got stuck around his neck. However, I checked my other bunny today and she is now flaking as well not as bad tho.

Could you take a picture of the affected area and upload it here?

My bunny went through a heavy moult last year over a couple of months and the fur on his ears did thin, with some visible white flakes behind the ears/neck area as well, so it could just be dry skin caused by a moult. It went away on its own eventually.

              This was my thread: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/169088/Default.aspx

Perhaps you could take a look and see if it’s something similar that’s happening to your bunnies?

The photos on your thread were so helpful. That is exactly how his flakes look like. Expect it’s more between the ears then on the actual ears. I have literally check every where on him, his bottom, sides, back and can’t find any flakes, it’s only in between his ears. Same for my girl bunny (she only has a small spot near her left ear)

I’m telling you looking online can really scare you. Every website was basically saying it’s mites and nothing else. But it just seems like if it’s mites it would get bad pretty quickly correct? I guess another thing that bother me, is that my vet didn’t do any type of test on him. She just looked at him and said it wasn’t it, but did not really give me an answer on what it could be. She mention allergy but did not go into detail.

This has been a 2 in half week event now, and it hasn’t really gotten worse. I’m going to go ahead and treat her just in case. Still going to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get worse. I’ll post pictures of it soon.

here are the photos. Today it actually looked like it cleared up a bit. I don’t know if that is because it all flaked off or got better though. They are both shedding pretty badly right now, I’m brushing them right now to help get some of the loose fur. I checked both of their fur that comes out on the brush and haven’t found anything on it. My vet wants me to come back so they can do additional treatment, but I’m not exactly sure about that. They have no sores, no redness, and they are not itching or anything, I already treated them with revolution and she didn’t even do any testing, so what treatment could they possibly give them with no testing to see if they actually have it?
