We have a 7 month old Mini Rex named buddy. We have had him for about 10 days. His current set up is a hay feeder above his litter box, carefresh in his litter box with a small layer of hay over the carefresh. He is peeing and pooping in his box, but he is also peeing and pooping all over his cage. He scatters poop when he is not in his cage but that has gotten a lot better now that he has settled in, but he seems to have zero issue with using his entire cage as a litter box and I’m not sure what else to do to encourage him to use his box. He fits in it comfortably, it’s large enough.

He is not yet neutered, but will be soon.

Your last statement answers your question. He’ll get better once he’s neutered. He’s territorial. It’s a new cage and new home to mark. Give it a month after the neuter.

It’s not a new cage, if that makes a difference. It’s all his own things. But it is a new home. I wasn’t sure if the pooping all over was a bedding/territory issue. He has a soft mat for bedding.

It’s definitely still territorial. When he’s neutered it’ll get better.

I agree its territorial, and it’s likely to get better once he’s neutered and the hormones have gone out of his system.

A bit of territorial pooping is, however, normal even for a neutered rabbit in a new environment. So it’s all normal ?

He should certainly improve once he is neutered but I had issues with my rabbit as well. It seemed to take him along time to catch on to the litter box. I would scoop up the poop and put it in the box and if he peed I would take a small piece of urine soaked tissue and put it in there as well. He eventually learned to only pee in his litter box but he’s 2 years old now and still poops all over the cage and the room. It’s not out of the ordinary for a rabbit to poop around the room

Unless there’s a bunny he’s not bonded to in the house, he really won’t poop all over the house once he’s litter trained. Buns will go in a pile all at once while they’re eating. Anything scattered about is territorial and related to hormones or another bunny in the house that is not bonded.

Bonton sits in his litter box to poop, then leaps out and leaves a poop trail to wherever he hops off to next lol.
