Hi, I’m back again with another question!
I live in Japan, and the only options for Hay Feeders are these teeny tiny baskets and have the smallest holes and hold maybe one hay session worth of hay. When my bun was a baby, she was fine with me filling it morning and night, but now that she’s a LOT bigger, it’s just not enough, so I resorted to trying and making my own.
The first one I mad had a big hole in it, and there would be SO MUCH hay wasted because she’s picky. She’d go through 2kg of hay of a week, but most would just be pulled out into the littler bin and thrown away.
So I bought a basket and hung it outside of her pen, having the open part of the basket facing the pen bars so she would kind of have to dig a bit and eat. The problem is, it gets kind of hard to pull the hay through the bars sometimes and she hasn’t been eating as much hay as she used to, leaving the hard-to-grab hay in the basket and just waiting for new hay. The hay towards the bottom is still reachable, but I think it gets squished down and is just hard for her to pull through the bars. I don’t know.
So I was thinking of making a wooden hay feeder with a small hole to place inside her pen. The only thing is is that I don’t want to use woodglue if it’s toxic to rabbits. I was wondering if there was anyone here who made their hay feeders and what they used? I’m not a wood-worker and I don’t know much about wood working, but I’m just making a box and filing a hole into it, then sanding it down so she doesn’t hurt herself on any parts of it.
If there is any advice on how else to make it, like coat it with this or don’t use glue only use nails or something, I’d love to hear it! I can’t find a good way to keep her eating hay without her wasting so much.
Even now, yeah, there’s some wasted, but before I was going through 2kg per week and most of it just garbage. She still eats hay, but I’m worried not enough. She is ALWAYS looking for food, when i let her out to play, it’s just the search for food. I just want a better way, and maybe easier/less messy way for me, to feed her her hay.
This is probably unnecessarily long, but thank you for reading!
TLDR; is there any glue that is bunny safe? Or is woodglue fine as long as I sand off any parts my bun would chew on? Also, any advice on making your own hayfeeder?
Thanks!!
