I have two 11 week old mini lops, brother and sister. I got them a week ago, i have them inside when im home and outside when im at work. When they first got here they were exploring inside a lot (they still do outside) but now whenever they are inside they just tend to stay in the upstairs of their hutch and lay down together. they have their back legs exposed so I know they feel safe. But I’m concerned they might be too hot? or maybe they just aren’t as happy as they are outside? I really want them to be happy with both because I want to hand raise them so they like spending time with me. but this has kind of stopped that from happening. i dont want to constantly pick them up and disturb them. Help!!!

          Hi there,

it sounds like they are just adjusting to their new home. It can take time for buns to settle in. Is there a reason why you are moving them daily?

Also, they should be separated soon so you don’t end up with a litter. Females can get pregnant at 12 weeks. Once they are spayed and neutered you can bond them.

My roommate wants them outside when I’m not there so they don’t mess up the carpet, plus I want them to have some time outside so they can experience it. I have the male booked in for steralisation already

But are they separated though? Even after his neuter he can still get her pregnant for up to a month. So it’s vwry important for her safety that they aren’t together. They could also become hormonal soon and have aggressive fights leading to difficulties during the proper bonding process. Bunnies don’t recognize family units, so being brother and sister is irrelevant.

They don’t need to be put outside when you’re not there – they can simply be put in pens with blankets/puppy pads/vinyl flooring.

There are many predators and parasites like RHD and RHD2 that they can get from being outside so it’s best for their health to be inside at all times. And like Sarah said, pens with vinyl floor lining you can buy from Lowe’s is great for inside

That’s odd because rabbits aren’t animals that have an inherent smell to them. Generally, most users on this forum, as it is an indoor rabbit forum, will promote that viewpoint, and I think there is a lot of research to back up why primarily indoor living helps rabbit longevity. If this is something you’re interested in for your rabbits, I recommend discussing with your roommate more about the details of their concerns and brainstorming ways to address it.

Rabbits are not smelly — typically, smell stems from a litter box that hasn’t been cleaned in a while. Urine may have a smell, especially for younger rabbits, but you can actually neutralize that smell by putting a tiny amount of apple cider vinegar in their water bowls.
