My bunny, Chip, is about 1 year old and spayed. For the past week she has been going through 2 12 oz bottles of water per day, and usually she just drinking 1 at most. I just switched her from oxbow Young Rabbit pellets to their Adult Rabbit pellets, not sure if that would have anything to do with it. She also seems to be urinating quite a bit more. She has left a few spots outside her litter box as well, and her urine is almost clear, as opposed to her normal yellow brownish urine. She gets unlimited Timothy and orchard grass hay, and about a cup of romaine lettuce and cilantro, as well as a few treats. Any ideas on what is going on? She has a vet appointment on Monday but I want to see if there were any ideas on what’s going on! Thanks!

A blood test and urine culture will determine if there is an infection or Kidney or liver failure. And ultrasound or X-ray might be taken as well to determine organ sizes.

Has she been molting or getting less veggies lately? Eating a lot more hay due to molting to keep from getting blockages can also cause extra water intake

She has been molting quite a bit! So maybe it is because of that. Thank you!!

Is she peeing on herself at all? It’s worth making sure that the vet checks for EC, which can cause excessive urination and kidney problems in buns. The test isn’t very reliable, so some vets will just treat on suspicion.

Please let us know how the vet visit goes!

This may be too late (since it’s Monday), but another potential cause for an increased water intake is dental issues. Rabbits may drink more water to increase mouth lubrication so the sharp sticks of molar spurs is not as harmful. You can also notice an increase in saliva production to get that lubrication as well.

Excessive drinking and peeing can be a symptom of many different ailments, ranging from very minor to really grave and everything in between. It is always an observandum and should be investigated. It can just to mention a few possible causes, be teeth kidney problems, diabetes (very rare though) or any type of inflammatory process in the body.

The vet checked her kidneys and said everything was normal! They thought it might just be a behavioral issue and suggested changing from a bottle to a bowl. If that doesn’t help, the next step would be to hospitalize her and do a water deprivation test to check for diabetes insipidus, but it sounds like that is very rare for rabbits.

She is still drinking a lot of water out of her bowl, but eating A LOT more hay than normal. I’m hoping it is just to compensate for the dry hay!

Im glad the vet visit went well!

Rabbits that eat lots of hay drink considerably more. A rabbit needs 100 ml (cc) water per kilo body weight and day. If a buns get fresh greens, a lot of the water will come from the greens. So if shes been eating more hay she would need more water.
