So last night I got a 9 week old bunny (my second one) and since I haven’t kept a bunny in a cage for over a year I had to buy new bedding. Foolishly I bought a big bag of lavender scented bedding, and didn’t even think about bunnies being sensitive to scents until I was filling the cage with the bedding and realized the bedding smells very strongly. The bedding says it is scented with real lavender and there are many lavender buds mixed into the bedding so I assume that there’s no essential oil or anything unnatural in the bedding, and I have read that lavender is safe for rabbits. I did put a thin layer of hay on top of the bedding to try to mask the smell a little bit, but this morning I’ve noticed that every once and a while she lets out very quiet and small sneezes.

Basically I’m wondering if this bedding could be dangerous to her and if I should completely stop using it. Like I said it’s a very big bag and I’m definitely not going to buy scented bedding again, but do you think this bedding could do any harm to her?

          Hi there, welcome

Lavender oils can accumulate in the bun’s body, so I would remove the bedding completely. While lavender itself is safe for buns to eat in small amounts, I think that if you can smell the scent strongly, then it must be VERY strong for bun, and is probably scented with something else.

For now you can just use hay in her litter box until you can get a replacement. Carefresh is great for litter training as is soft and fluffy. I really like pine pellets with a layer of hay on top as they are very economical and absorb odors well.
