Hello! my rabbit hyunnie has been pooping either really small feces or big ones and I don’t know if I should be concerned about this? She is starting to molt so i don’t know if it’s maybe because she swallowed hair or is it something about her diet? Other than her feces she looks great and is eating well and very active. I appreciate any kind of help thank you!

Hi there, it could be a small blockage from hair that is only allowing some poop to pass through and breaking up other poop which is why some poops are smaller than others. Normally though if a rabbits poop is inconsistent in size or shape it is cause for concern because this could be the start of GI stasis. However if she is still eating hay and passing some poop I personally would not consider it an emercency just yet since there is always the possibility that she could pass it on her own. That being said, make sure to get her to a vet immedietly if she stops eating hay, drinking water or her bahavior changes. What you could also do that won’t hurt to try is get some infant gas releif that has simethicone in it. 1cc (20mg/ml suspension) can be given orally as often as every hour for 3 hours and then 1cc every 3-8 hours. This will help relieve any pain that she may have, which will entice her to eat more and hopefully help her pass that blockage(if it is one). Hope this helps!

No Problem! If the noises you are hearing are like gurgling or crackling noises than those are normal. That is something you will hear when your rabbits intestines are moving normally. Its when those noises stop, then you should be concerned because that means she has probably gone into stasis. So familiarize yourself with those gurgles so you know whats normal for her! Hope she is feeling better soon

Thank you! I have another question if you don’t mind me asking, I’ve noticed she hasn’t pooped as much in the last few hours but she eats and drinks water normally. My sister said she saw a few feces in her cage and I saw one but now they’re gone? We think she might have ate them but I know rabbits only eat cecotropes so it’s very weird. We also thought she could’ve kicked them but I don’t see any poops outside her cage hahaha. Should I be worried about the poop? Or is it normal?

My rabbit actually will sometimes eat both her normal poops and her cecotropes. It very weird so I wouldn’t worry about that! I would watch her poop count though. If it gets any lower than what you are seeing now, it might be a good idea to see a vet. My rabbit when she goes into stasis will also sit very abnormally. She will arch her back and push her butt up into the air and sit like that for hours. She looks extremely uncomfortable. So if she is sitting weird or isolating herself that could mean she is going into a stasis episode too.

                    Hi Eliana,

How is your bunny this morning?

Should sounds like she could be going into stasis, or at least be in some pain from gas. Gas pain can cause big and small poops like you describe. You can try giving her a tummy rub, push a bunch of fresh greens on her, and encourage her to move around. If she doesn’t produce a big pile of healthy looking poops within a couple hours, or if she has stopped eating, get her to the vet ASAP.
