Hi all….. I am 1st time rabbit owner and everyone here has been so helpful! I am settling into my 3rd week with my new little Lop bunny Poe and I am not really fully understanding the litter training. I have read copious amounts on the subject. but I still feel I might be going about all wrong.
this is his set up:
24 sq foot enclosure with a 30″x 18″ cage that the rescue gave me. I have put a corner litter box (filled with yesterdays news litter) in the cage and lined it with newspaper he has been pretty good about only going in the cage but he doesn’t seem to be getting it . There are pills and urine everywhere including the litter box, I also have a little hutch hay feeder combo out in the enclosure and i bought a shoe tray to put it on and he started to pea on it so I put a small litter box also. He is still a baby and of course not neutered.
It has been suggested to me to leave him in the smaller cage while I am at work and let him into the enclosure before work and after but i tried to do that once with he use of a water bottle and he didn’t drink all day!
At the moment I let him have free range of the enclosure and leave the cage door open. I clean out the dirty newspaper and pills but is this necessary? I have tried to put the newspaper that has urine on into the litter box but that doesn’t seem to phase him. He hasn’t really “chose” a corner he kinda of free ranges in the cage. I was wondering if that is okay and if I eventually take the cage away and replace it with a large litter box that might work?
As you can see I am utterly confused about a good litter box training method…any advice would be greatly appreciated! the pics below are of his habitat.
