        Hi everyone,
My rabbit Luna had GI stasis 5 days ago and after we received great care from our rabbit savy vet she was well enough to take home 2 days ago. My concern is that she hasn’t touched her water bowl since she’s been home. I keep refilling it with fresh water and moving it near her to get her to drink, nothing works. I’m pretty sure she’s peed out all the sub-q fluids she was receiving, unless they last longer than 2 days? She isn’t peeing a lot (much less than usual as she usually drinks water after every hay session). I try to add extra water to her veggies, but she is a slow eater after coming home so it will sometimes evaporate if she doesn’t eat soon enough. Due to cold weather the air is very dry and I am trying to run the humidifier near her x-pen as much as I can. I have a new water bowl coming tomorrow in case she has bad associations with her old one? FYI: I did discuss this with the vet yesterday and she said if she stops peeing entirely we will bring her back to get more sub-q fluids. I don’t want her getting dehydrated and getting GI stasis again.. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to get her to drink? I’ll include her puppy pad with her (smaller than average since GI stasis) poops and 1 days worth of urine.

Sub q fluids only last a day. She need to be immediately put on subq fluids as she is probably very dehydrated and causing organ damage as the body needs water as it is the most important nutrient. Have the vet teach you how to give subq it’s very easy so you can do it at home and continue it until she is well.

Even if she continues to urinate, just less than she did before GI stasis?

Well if she isn’t drinking and she is urintatin, that means her urine is very concentrated and it is trying to rid the body of toxins which means that she is dehydrated as her urine wouldn’t be concentrated if she was hydrated

We are bringing her into the vet today to get taught how to administer sub-q fluids from home. I hope she doesn’t have to be on them too long before she feels better again. What a rough week she’s had.

Subq fluids are pretty easy to administer, the hardest part will be immobilizing your bun. It also really makes you feel bad to have to poke them. I had to do it with my cat for 2 years , at the end. Good luck !

Back from the vet, she said Luna only really needs half a cup of water a day so she wasn’t too worried about her not drinking (she weights about 1.7Kg/4 Lbs). We did get sub-q fluids and pain meds for home, but we were told she doesn’t really need it? She’s got sub-q fluids at the vet.

Depending on the size of a bunny, a bunny 4 pounds need 250-300 ml a day of fluids so depending on her weight, she will need her amount of fluids and if she doesn’t get them then she needs to be given them sub q

Is she eating greens without a fuss? If so, you can just soak her greens in water. This will help and will save you the energy of fighting with her and sub-q fluids. Also, it’s a good trick to measure out a half cup into her bowl and see how much of that she has finished in 24 hours.

Just wanted to let everyone know, after she received sub-q fluids as the vet, we never had to administer any more at home. She began to eat and drink as normal and has made a full recovery.
