Bun Jovi is not doing well

Mostly just hoping for some moral support. Sorry if this is not very clear. Got home from work around 7 pm and he was not interested in food and acting very uncomfortable. Belly was very firm… and he seemed very dehydrated. Temp a bit low… at first we thought 98. Then not sure if we were taking it correctly, but an hour later it was 99.4, so only slightly low. Been gave simethicone once and hour for three hours and fluids.  He improved a bit after the first treatment… hopped around a bit, belly felt better, and was drinking hay tea readily, and readily taking some very liquid critical care from the syringe. Have gotten at least 15 ml of water in him, plus another 5 or so of very liquid CC. He’s eaten probably 1/2 cup of wet greens on his own. Didn’t want to give too much CC in case it’s a blockage… but really happy he’s eaten something on his own, and I didn’t have to force the CC.

More recently then he’s not really wanting anything from the syringe, but he has eating some carrot tops on his own. He seems to be resting comfortably under a blanket.

I don’t know if this is it…. (he’s at least 10)…. or if this is gas/stasis that he will pull through. He was completely normal this morning.

Why do these things always happen on the weekends?

Vibes for the poor lil guy. So sorry to hear you’re going through this!
I havent had a senior bun, but I can understand why you’d be concerned, hopefully its just a case of stasis, as he seems to be doing okay if he’s eatibg on his own.
Even if it is old age, at least he is feeling a wee bit more spritely!

I am so sorry Bun Jovi isn’t feeling well. I hope it is just a little bit of stasis. There definitely seems to be a huge spike in stasis stories these days. Healing vibes being sent his way!!

                    Thanks everyone. <3

Didn’t really sleep last night. Stayed on the floor next to him and made sure he stayed under his blanket and had someone to comfort him. Bertha is a terrible bunwife when it comes to illnesses in her partners… she basically ditches them… so of course I didn’t want him alone without someone to snuggle, and i was going to be checking on him hourly anyway.

He seems stable-ish…but still no poops, and very lethargic. He hopped into the box to pee once (not sure how much but his tail lifted). The last time we took his temp last night it as 99.4, but this morning he hasn’t let us take it (he is much more feisty, which i hope is a good sign).

He will sit on my lap for a bit, but I tried having him lay on my tummy and he was not having it. He loves pets, but has never liked being held or snuggled. He does seem to like being tucked under a blanket though, which seems to be helping.

We were able to get more carrot tops this morning, which is the only thing he will eat. He ate a few more sprigs this morning (albeit without much gusto). Still no poops.

Been syringing small amounts of very liquid CC (like 2 mL or so) and hay tea. He has been drinking hay tea from the syringe pretty readily, so that’s good… probably have gotten about 20 ml into him over the last 12 hours or so.

I also have been encouraging movement. I’m trying to balance the fact that this might be something more serious (like a heart condition), so I don’t want to shoo him around too much…

Just hoping he doesn’t get worse before we can get to the vet. Right now he doesn’t seem like he’s in an extreme amount of pain (no grinding, maybe some squinting), he just seems very lethargic. And obviously no poops and very low appetite.

Healthy vibes for the little guy. Glad to hear he is trying to come around a bit more but I’m sorry he’s not back to his full self. So scary when they do this to us but you’re clearly doing everything you can at home. I agree on the movement front – I try to give Olaf a little nudge here and there when he seems to be suffering from gas or digestive troubles. Sending lots of love and prayers! <3

                        Oh, pooh… poor lil guy…

It sounds like you’re doing all the right things, Dana, and his continued appetance for carrot tops and tea, as well as his increased bunnytude, make me think that you’re helping him feel better.

Sending lots of love and vibes ((((((Bun Jovi))))))

Dropped him off at the vets this morning. He produced some cecals last night, so I guess that’s good? As I was chasing him around to get him in the carrier he did produce one small, teardrop shaped, mucousy poop… so hoping more are on the way.

Thanks for all the vibes. He is definitely a little fighter to make in through the weekend. <3

Back from the vet’s, and he’s improving!

X-ray confirmed no blockage, and his temp was normal, so they pumped him full of fluids and pain meds, and spent some time chasing him around an exam room. He finally pooped around 5 pm, it was all strung together with fur, but they said it was a large amount. So it seems like the most likely cause is stasis due to ingesting too much fur. Now I feel terrible for not being better about grooming. I’ve been grooming them both a bit morning and night but I guess I really need to do a deeper job, even if it means plopping them on a table for a few minutes.

So they sent him home with me for the night, but I will take him back in the morning if he’s not totally back to normal so that can continue treatments.

He’s eating a little and is generally much more like himself, but still not completely better.

They all commented on how he was thumping at them, and is very stubborn about his critical care! He just wouldn’t swallow it for them! I managed to get about 12 cc in him when we got home, so I feel accomplished.

Thanks for all the vibes! They seem to be helping!

All of these stories these days have me on edge for sure and I know I am stepping up my brushing game. Don’t feel bad. You’re a great bunny mom!! It seems like you can never brush enough but any brushing seems to be too much in a lot of their minds. It’s always hard to do something they don’t like even when we know it’s good for them.

Even though he was improved in the morning, I still took him went back to the vet yesterday for another round of pain meds and monitoring, and was better still last night. This morning his poops are finally starting to be uniform in size and round again (although still small).

Opted to monitor at home today since he’s eating hay and veggies better and I can work from home today. He is loving fresh grass right now (which is thankfully abundant), so I think he is craving the things that are helping his tummy. He’s eaten a pretty much normal portion of veggies, spread out over the morning. I basically shove wet greens under his nose any chance I get.

The vet didn’t want to send me home with pain meds… I think he is medicating pretty conservatively, possibly due to BJ’s age? I do have that expired metacam (and he was given metacam plus another stronger med at the vet), so if he seems bad tonight I will give him that. I went to the same vet with Pippen (my foster who had extreme tummy issues), and the treatment was different (motility meds and pain meds daily for a long while), so I trust that he is doing what he thinks will work best for Bun Jovi. If he’s still iffy by Friday I will definitely push for him to give me pain meds and subq fluids in case anything happens for the weekend.

So, I think his tummy is coming back online. Just gotta keep him eating as much as possible to keep moving the conveyor belt along! Thanks for all the vibes!

He’s back to almost 100%, thanks for all the vibes everyone!

For anyone finding this later, he responded well to two days of pain meds (he got metacam plus a stronger one, buprenorphine). Fluids the first day, syringe feeding the second.

Once he started eating again we gave him as much fresh grass as he could eat (and he wanted A LOT of it).

He did give us such a scare… I thought I was going to lose him on Sat night…. Very thankful right now!
