I was sitting on the floor with Gizmo while I did some homework and he napped. I heard a noise that sounded like a whine but I honestly thought it was my own stomach. Then I heard it again and looked up at Gizmo and to my surprise, it was him. I found another video online of a Checkered Giant making a similar noise, but it was being held and seemed distressed. The confusing part was Gizmo almost immediately flopped over and started grooming his paws after whining. So I have a bunny making a noise equating distress while also flopping over, which normally means extreme contentment? I have not personally brought Gizmo to the vet yet as the sanctuary I got him from is reputable and got him checked out three days before I brought him home. My plan was to go in during April which would be around six months but I’m thinking I might have to go sooner.

Was he asleep ? Bunnies have nightmares too , I’m sure. Maybe it was something simple like that.

I’m not sure. He had definitely been asleep prior to this though. I emailed the sanctuary he came from to see if they’d heard him make that noise before and while they said no, they also said he sounded relaxed and it probably wasn’t anything to worry about.

Sometimes rabbits can make pretty loud vocalizations for both distress and comfort/relaxation. There are a few times where I’ll pet Wick and each time I stroke, it’s like an accordion and he’ll release a loud whine sound. Part of me thinks it’s intentional, another part of me wonders if it’s just how he decided to relax his vocal chords, so my stroking just allowed a vocalization to happen.

It could be something in his nose that made it a bit more vocal than usual. If it’s a one-time incidence, perhaps just monitor and see if it occurs again! Always good to monitor health-related behaviors, like eating, pooping, and movement.
