Hi all. So usually at bed time Marzipan likes to snuggle up to me while i pet him, and him flopping on his side is pretty common. A little while ago, He flopped on his side, but then he started to twitch his upper lip, his ear, and his legs repeatedly. he the kicked his legs as hard as he could (only once) and then he rolled almost completely on his back all while sleeping. His nose wasnt wiggling and his eyes were open the whole time. After me freaking out and calling for my parents, he woke up like nothing ever happened. I dont think i can can describe how surreal it was. it only lasted a minute or two and he is completely fine now. he is eating and drinking water fine, and his poops are fine. Was this a seizure or was it something else? my parents think he was dreaming but he has never dont anything like that before and he is a year old.

Hmmm, so Bertha can get really twitchy and weird looking when she is dreaming (lips and ears get really twitchy, and she will list to one side… it looks pretty alarming if you don’t know what’s going on). She also often sleeps with her eyes open, and their nose will usually stop or slow twitching while they are asleep. But, I’ve never seen her roll over or kick hard.

Was he responsive if you made a noise? If he was dreaming he would wake up right away, vs a seizure would continue no matter what you did.

Yes! right when i yelled for my parents he got up and looked around. I’m still a bit concerned from when he kicked his legs really hard. I don’t think he has ever had a dream like this before. he was so into it his head was completely on his side.

My bun will twitch and kick while dreaming, and he does it sometimes with his eyes open. IMO it means he feels very safe.

Ok yeah, then I think if he responded to sound he was just sleeping very deeply!

But just to confirm, you might watch some of the clips in this article on rabbit seizures so see if things match up: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/seizure.htm

I suspect he was simply dreaming during deep sleep.

When dogs run and twitch in their sleep it can look like a seizure. The difference is you can wake a dog up if it’s dreaming, if the dog is having a seizure, you can’t stop it by waking the dog up.

I too suspect your bun was dreaming (REM sleep). If it happens again, you could try and wake him. If he snaps out of it, it’s not a seizure.
