        Hey guys,

I’m taking in this adorable Flemish Giant Rabbit and I’m so excited and nervous at the same time. Any one have experience with these babies and can lend some advice? Where did you find a big enough litter box? How big of an xpen did you get? ( he is hopefully going to be free around the house but for times he isn’t, I want to make sure he is safe and not able to jump out but comfortable enough to have play room) I can not find a travel taxi or something similar that looks like it will be big enough.

So yea, sorry for the ramble. I just want to make sure I have everything to make him safe and comfortable. So if anyone knows where I can buy cute bunny stuff but 4x bigger, let me know

Also, any words of encouragement or advice would be great

Big Bunny! Exciting!!! I’ve never had a bun over 10lbs but for him, I used a low sided cat litter box.

We got a 3 ft by 18 inch storage bin for our litter box. Be prepared for a lot of waste! We got a double X pen – a single was definitely too small.

His snout was too big for any of the puzzle toys we got him. ☹ He has almost no interest in toys unless they contain food; he just wants to be around people.

Ours is prone to soaking his chin when drinking from a bowl so we got a automatic cat water bowl with an inverted bottle and a very small bowl. The shelter we got him from said this is a common problem with Flemishes.

Flemishes are usually sweet and affectionate but I am sure you already know that. A great aspect of their size and consumption is that you can give them more treats, which makes them like you even more! We are really delighted with ours even if he does still pee on the couch occasionally. He doesn’t chew or dig although I don’t know if that is a Flemish trait or just him.

I have a Checkered Giant. The breed overall is 1/3 Flemish, 1/3 French Lop, and 1/3 Dutch, so he’s not quite as big as a pure Flemish would be. Gizmo weighs in at 11 pounds and when he stands is about 3 feet tall. I had a 36 inch X-pen left over from my Californian and when he wants to, he can clear it in one leap. I would highly suggest a 48 inch pen with either extension panels or another pen hooked to it. I also have a cat litter box thats about four-five inches tall. He uses it very easily, but sometimes when the wood pellets expand and the litter level rises, he backs up too far and pees over the side.

I also had trouble with a carrier. I ended up buying a small dog carrier rated up to 20 pounds and I think he fits in it perfectly. I’ve attached a photo with the brand cropped out but please let me know if there’s any sort of brand promotion in it.

For toys, Gizmo is OBSESSED with anything willow based. He actually really loves the smaller tunnels that are meant to be used for little bunnies but with them stuffed with hay. He also loves running through his tube; mine is 8 inches in diameter but yours will probably get bigger so I would suggest a cat one.

They are the sweetest bunnies and I think they’re one of the best “starter” bunnies when it comes to personality and laid-backness, but their size does pose some unique issues. As high as you think you need to put cords, put them higher than that. They’re large but they can still squeeze through small spaces and sometimes get stuck so double check everything.
