My mini lop has very dry skin in his ear canals- how can I safely remove it without hurting him?

          Hi there,

You shouldn’t remove it. If it’s deep in the canals, I wonder if it could be the beginning of eat mites (in that case, removing the crust can be very painful and should never be done). Usually if the skin is very dry and flakey it is paired with a medical condition (like mites or even a respiratory infection). If it’s mild then it might be due to molting or just dry air, and shouldn’t need any treatment.

It does not look like ear mites, he has had it in his left ear ever since we adopted him in November. His right ear is fine except for scratches from fighting with my other buck (accidentally, the other one escaped from his cage)

I agree with DanaNM, it would be good to consult a vet Incase it’s something that needs to be treated.

I would first consult a vet, as suggested, because if it’s enough that you’re considering removing it, that may be a significant amount that’s indicative of something, whether it be mites, ear irritation, etc..

If it’s found to be dry skin, I still would not remove it, but when Wick went through dry ear skin (peak of dry winter), I would use q-tips to gently swipe a bit of olive oil on the outer part of the ear, nowhere near the canal at all.

I do not currently have a good rabbit vet in my area, but I did find an organic cure for ear mites in case that is what it is. I do have a good rabbit person nearby, but she was uncertain about it, as she does not have lop eared rabbits.

I know the forum leaders can help you find a vet near you. I would not use anything on the ears unless okayed by a vet as it could have negative consequences and could lead to further issues.

Have you checked the link above to find a rabbit savvy vet near you?

I have checked the link and I also Googled vets in my area, but they did not have a rabbit vet.
