So about 5 days ago my female rabbit which is about 9 months old started to pee orange. I did the hydrogen peroxide test to see if it was blood and it didn’t foam so no blood. Tonight I was listening to her stomach and is was making some pretty strange gurgling noises, and I’m really worried she might be having a gas problem! She is still drinking water and eating and pooping. But I’m very concerned. My other male rabbit which is also 9 months gets the same amount of food, vegetables, and pellets , and his pee is yellow, but he’s fixed? I’m so worried ! There isn’t a rabbit vet really near me, it’s quite a drive and Im very busy at this time! If it is gas or bloat how do I tell? Is there anything I can get to give her that won’t hurt her??

Orange pee is completely normal, sometimes their pee can be totally different colours depending what they eat.

A gurgling stomach can be a sign of gas, but if she’s eating and pooping and active that’s a very good sign. Normally a rabbit with gas looks visibly uncomfortable – they keep lying down and getting back up, or sitting in a hunched or unusual position. They often will hide and will refuse even their favourite foods. They might stop pooping. So it doesn’t sound like gas, it could just be a gurgly tummy that’s causing no pain!

If you think a bunny has gas, you can give them baby gas drops, with the key ingredient simethicone. This is sold as Infacol in the UK. You can give them 1 ml an hour for 3 hours, but often the first dose will work. It’s perfectly safe and doesn’t get absorbed by the digestive system, it just breaks up gas bubbles.

Thank you so much! Yeah she just woke me up for breakfast, her normal routine, she ate her food then plopped. Thank you so much I’m going to get some today! Is it the same in the US? I live in California. I’m assuming so , so today I’ll look for baby gas drops.

I’m not sure what it’s sold as in the US, just look for simethicone
it’s always good to have some on hand for when you need it!

Mylicon is a brand name of simethicone baby gas drops in the USA. But you should be able to find generic simethicone baby gas drops as well. Walmart sells baby gas drops and so do of course pharmacies.

I agree with S&L, it is really good to have some in the bunny first aid cabinet!

Yes I found some I just gave it to her on her salad and she ate it, I’m watching her closely now. She truly seems fine, as far as eating, drinking and pooping, but she does just have this worried look on her face and she’s been a little skiddish? I listened to her stomach and my others rabbits stomach and hers sounded completely different. Like popping noises or a rubber band snapping almost like a human stomach. So she seems to be ok but I’m still very concerned and I’ll give her more when I give them their nightly treat

That can be a sign of just active movement, sort of like how your stomach may get louder as things move through. That’s definitely good evidence that gas is moving about, so massaging could help get it out, as well as the gas drops. If you sense she’s hurting or something from your massaging, be sure to be gentle and respect those signs as well!
