Hello! I have a 2.5 (almost 3) month old Netherland Dwarf rabbit. He’s still very new to the home – only been about 5 days. I was reading how rabbits can be neutered starting around 10-14 weeks. He’s getting to be around that age, but I’m wondering how long I should wait to do the surgery, since he’s still getting adjusted to the apartment?

        Thanks

Have you taken him to a rabbit savvy vet? They will check his overall health, give you good info about a proper diet for him and then talk about what age to neuter him.

I don’t see a lot of vets willing to neuter at 10 weeks. Normally 12 weeks is the minimum age. Some vets won’t neuter unless their testicles have descended and some will. The time it takes for this to happen can vary.

With that said I have a great vet and I was told he will do them at 12 weeks but he prefers 6 months. That convinced me to hold off even though I got my buck when he was around 5 months already. I don’t regret this in the least. The month delay gave us time to get used to each other.

If it were me I would wait until he’s close to 6 months old just to be as safe as possible, but definitely wouldn’t do it prior to 4 months. Personally I think they should have a chance to grow up.

My boys were neutered at 16 weeks, but both also had descended and were quite hormonal. Definitely wait until you know for certain he has dropped because he might actually be a she. Baby buns are often incorrectly sexed, so a vet visit is definitely in order first. Most vets won’t neuter without first giving your bun a wellness check either.

My vet had me wait until my bun was 6 months old.

There’s also normally a minimum weight that vets are happy to neuter at, so with a small breed like a netherland dwarf, its worth waiting until they’re bigger. My vet said ideally 1kg, but obviously not all bunnies reach 1kg – I think my littlest one was neutered at around 900g and 6 months old.
