        I just got a new bunny to bond with my baby now that shes healed from her spay, they’re still in pre-bonding and probably will be for awhile as she still has till the 10th until shes fully “bunny ready” to meet another bunny.

        when i went to the shelter, i wasn’t going for this one i was going for another but i noticed that he had a splayed leg (he was laying sideways so i could only see one) and immediately asked for him because i know disabled bunnies can have a hard time getting adopted.

        he’s a super cute baby and very sweet and gentle, he’s person and bunny friendly as he already wants to see kookie a lot and immediately grooms all the stuffed animals that smell like her without trying to scent them, he licked me earlier today when i sat in his cage to try and clean him up.

        the shelter paperwork said he was found in someones front yard, which leads me to believe the original owner let him out probably because of his disability, he doesn’t seem to mind it and from what i can see he isn’t in pain and can get around pretty normally (the shelter didnt have carpet floors.. poor thing) and he’s able to get in and out of a normal litter box without much problem but i still have some questions

        note: he hasn’t been to a vet yet, i must wait till tomorrow to call my vet for him

        i’m not sure if theres different “levels” of a splay, but he can in theory stand up, but his legs go out to the side so he kind of looks like a cowboy when he tries to stand, he can’t bring his front legs/paws together to groom his face like other bunnies do. one leg is clearly worse than the other and he has a hard time getting up on it where as the other he can push up on to turn around and such. he doesn’t seem to like them being touched but doesn’t act if it hurts.

        if his front legs are like this is there a chance they could get worse and go into a “full” splay like i see most bunnies with where they can’t get up on them at all?

        also is there a chance of his back legs becoming splayed as well?

        are there any accommodations i should make for him? i was thinking of making the entrance to his litter box lower, but i saw he just hops in and out using his back legs so i wasn’t sure.

         his cage right now is foam pads (puzzle piece ones) on carpet wrapped in fleece + soft blanket but he still seems to slide a little, i’m unsure if it was because his front paws seem to just slide outwards no matter what or if the blanket was too slippery?

        non splay question(s):

        i can’t seem to tell if his paw fur is grey in general (as my first bunny has black fur, i’ve never had one with white fur before) or if it’s just completely dirt. + i know theres already dirt on it and was curious to see if there was a good way to clean it without getting his paws wet, i thought maybe wiping with baby wipes?

          I don’t really have any knowledge about bunnies with splayed legs so I can’t offer any suggestions. I just wanted to say thank you for taking him in. He sounds like such a sweetheart. I hope that if I am ever looking for another bunny that I could give a bunny a chance like you did.

          If I were to guess I would imagine that splayed legs could make them susceptible to getting arthritis at an earlier age so keeping him on well cushioned flooring like you are sounds like a great start. Good luck with him and the bonding! I would love to see updates on how it goes.

            Thank you for adopting this beautiful special-needs boy!

            The website Disabled Rabbits has info about splay legs rabbits and how to care for them: http://www.disabledrabbits.com/splay-leg.html

            It’s a very good website with helpful tips.

            You can try to wipe the feet with baby wipes. It’s generally ok to give a bun’s hind quarters a bath – it’s a full bath that should be avoided.

              That’s wonderful you offfered this beautiful boy a home.

              I don’t have any experience with splayed legs but the website Bam mentions is great. If you are on Facebook, there is also a group called “Disabled Rabbits”. I’m sure they would be happy to answer any questions you have.
