My buns have the same diet, Archie appears to be around the same weight as when I adopted him, and Taz has always been a bigger bun but it’s starting to worry me. I do not have a scale for them yet but I have been working on getting one. When I look at Taz he looks like he’s grown in size and weight than when I adopted him. Archie has grown, but his weight has stayed the same. Their diet is usually a large handful of greens twice a day, a banana for them to share, and sometimes pellets. They do get the occasional processed treat but I’m limiting those. I am a teenager so my mom tends to feed them herself and gives them a lot of pellets. Can anyone give me a solid diet recommendation?

There is a lot of great information on feeding in the bunny info section of this website.

You didn’t mention hay. Are they getting any?

A banana between the two is way too much if you are talking about a whole banana.

If your mom is giving too many pellets I would talk to her. I would try and see if she’ll let you take over the feeding so you can monitor it a little better. If you don’t want to take it over then I would talk to her about a proper diet for them. I definitely wouldn’t be going from no pellets one day to too many the next. They really need to have a more consistent diet to avoid stomach/stasis issues.

A good diet for a healthy adult bun is 1 tablespoon pellets per kilo bun (roughly 1 tablespoon per 2 pounds of bun), a cup of leafy greens and a tiny bit of fruit as a treat. The main component of a bun’s diet should be hay, there’s no limit to the the amount and it should be available 24/7.

Half a banana is a LOT if given every day, so I’d start by cutting back on that.

It’s very difficult to resist a begging rabbit because they’re cuter than anything else in the world, so maybe you could measure up the daily allowance of pellets in the morning and your num could feed them as treats during the day?

You could give them more exercise and time to play outside the cage. That’s what worked for my bunny to lose weight.

I forgot to mention the hay in that post but yes they have a timothy/grass hay mixture that they love available 24/7. They go crazy with those bananas, but I will definitely limit them to 1/4 of it when they do have them. I understand why my mom would be feeding them, I am a teenager with ADHD, but we did talk and agreed I would take control of their diet.

I did forget to mention their hay when I posted that, but they do have timothy/grass hay available all the time. I will definitely cut back on the bananas, they go crazy when they see me with one and start climbing all over me. They are hard to resist, and my mom usually just feeds them when she thinks I forget too, but we agreed I would control their diet. Thank you for the advice!

I have kind of been slacking on their exercise lately. They live in a large square basically but it’s not big enough for them to exercise. I let them in the hallway and sit with a gate up since I have two dogs. I will get back on their exercise though.

1/4 of a banana is still too much. Like literally just cut one piece for each of them
