The last several months, whenever I go to clean Tippit’s cage, she decides to pee and shake her tail, at the same time. This behavior flings urine outside of the cage and it gets everywhere…. on me, the walls and curtains, and obviously the carpet. Last night, I sat down to clean her cage, and she just straight up peed… 18” or more away from her little butt! WTH! I have never had a rabbit do this, to my knowledge, and am baffled as for what to do…. I can buy urine guards for around the cage, but that won’t get the front of it where the door opens, and when she does the tail shake, it wouldn’t matter because urine would get flung up above the top of the urine guards. Why is she doing this and how do I stop it!

Is Tippit spayed? It’s not at all uncommon for unfixed rabbits to spray and that sounds exactly like what you are dealing with.

No!! I was wondering if that would help.

That is definitely the first thing I would do to try and help with the issue. It should help resolve it. Just keep in mind that it does take time after being spayed for their hormones to settle so she may still spray for some time after.

Spaying will most likely help greatly. Both male and female buns are prone to pee spraying. I had a male that could pee right up a wall like 70 centimeters (ca 28 inches). It was quite impressive! Some buns pee horisontally in a semi circle to cover as big an area as possible. It is very inconvenient for the human, for a bun it’s about territory and claiming ownership. It can also be a declaration of love.

My bun stopped his projectile peeing when he was neutered. He was wonderful with going in the litterbox, once he stopped “spray-painting” the wall behind the litter box, that is. Never ever peed in my bed or the sofa or anything.

My bunny started spraying when he hit sexual maturity and I got him neutered and he never did it again. It was a relief too because he kept spraying my cats who did not enjoy it.
