Hi everyone!
As someone who use to be more involved with the more industrial side of rabbits, for lack of better words, I am now hoping to adhere to a “house rabbit” lifestyle where I can enrich my rabbit’s life, first by addressing my main welfare concern, which has to do with housing. Maesy (3lb holland lop doe) is currently housed in a cage, because of my living arrangements and the rules of my landlord, I am currently unable to let her out of the cage when i am not home as they only allow rabbits under the condition that they are “caged animals” and allowing her to have free roam would violate this rule. Due to this, I am hoping to add some sort of run which I could attach to her cage (its a normal cage but it has a stand built into it so it is off the ground) which would still be considered “caged” but address the welfare concern that she does not currently have the space she deserves. When I am home, I open the side door to her cage, add a ramp (made of out a cardboard box), and she is allowed to move in and out as she pleases, sometimes she prefers to sit in her cage, and other times she likes to just run around. I would like to add an option where she still has this choice–being in or out of her cage– but would like to maximize her overall space and comfort. I have been researching different cage ideas, but am getting quite overwhelmed.
My main concerns:
-because I would like to keep her current cage, I am not quite sure what material to use around her cage, that would allow her to still have access to her cage, without her being able to escape and tear apart my room (She has gone through 8 chargers, 3 pairs of headphones including a $150 pair and whatever wires, blankets and molding she can get her teeth on). I was thinking about some sort of fencing, but there are so many different options I’m not sure if anyone here has any recommendations that could work in my situation.
-I want this to be a bunny proof area, so my landlord will not have any concerns over destruction to my room. I currently have a carpet under her cage that is around 8′ by 5′ long. This is the area that I was hoping to “fence in” giving her 40 square feet of exercise space, in addition to her cage space. However, she hates using a litter box, and I am worried that she will urinate over it, ruining the carpet and leading to foul odors I cannot remove and an unhappy landlord. I was hoping to add some type of other floor lining to this area, like a tile, or linoleum, but I have seen cages where there is a lined plastic? I’m not quite sure what I could use without making the floor slippery that could cause arthritic or mobility health issues later on in her life.
– Besides the basic food/water dishes and litter box, I was also hoping to add other items that will help enrich her life and make my life a little easier. I was thinking about a hay box which would make her space less messy (she loves digging in her hay and throwing it EVERYwhere), a foraging box, and more toys but I do not have the time allowances to make these items myself. I was hoping for any recommendations on where to buy items like these and any and all toy items that will allow her to play more.
Recommendations I am hoping for:
– Fencing or material to make run
– Flooring ideas to make it “leak proof”
– Any other enrichment ideas or links!
I also tried to attach a picture of my pretty lady, but I’m not quite sure if it uploaded. Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions!
