Hi everyone, first time poster long time reader!

I live in rural-ish NSW Australia and need to take my baby, 7 year old Thumper, to visit a specialist. She’s been limping  on her hind left leg for the past 8 days and my family has agreed with me that she needs to go, the terrible RHDV2 virus was making us second guess a vet trip. But at the same time I’m so worried that I feel sick she has a fracture or dislocation.

We wanted to see David Vella from all the recommendations, but it has been a headache trying to contact him or try to get an appointment. So I was just looking to see if anyone has experience with other bunny specialists in SERV? At the moment we are either seeing Dr Cathy Hudson or Dr Yui Tsutsumi, but I’m nervous since I can’t find many reviews mentoring them. Our 3rd option at the moment is traveling 10 hours to Melbourne, which we’ve done but isn’t ideal.

Any experiences you guys could share would be awesome, and thanks for your time.

Im not in NSW but I just wanted to say, I think you’d be in good hands. Both those vets appear to have interest in rabbis, and if they work with/for Dr Vella, they are going to be up with the latest in rabbit medicine. Just my thoughts..

There are some facebook groups of Aust. rabbit owners you could ask on. I’m not certain of the group names.. I found this one which has over 2.5K members.

Best wishes with the vet visit!

            Hello

I live in Sydney and I have experience with SERV – my bunny had a GI issue last year and spent a couple of days there.

Understand your frustration. I know several bunny owners who wanted him (for various issues, mainly spaying) based on his reputation. None of them (including myself) succeeded in making an appt with him. I wanted his direct consult while my bunny was staying at SERV due to her illness. Basically, the best consult since I was certainly paying a premium (they aren’t cheap and that’s largely based on his reputation). I was nervous since she was being treated by people I had no info on, unlike him.

Ok, having said that, I DID find vets there well versed in rabbit matters and would say your Thumper would be in good hands. I would go back should the need arise. And, yes, I would prefer to have the Dr who I read about and attracted me to SERV in the first place.

Best info I can offer. Good luck with (((Thumper)))!

Thanks for your replies and good wishes JerseyGirl and Meridiian. ♡

After a lot of calling, we were lucky enough to book what I guess was a cancelled slot with David Vella, and if he cancels on us we’ll be seeing Cathy Hudson. I’m hoping whoever we see takes the time to properly look after Thumpy, considering they seem to have a tight schedule.

One receptionist actually recommended I just keep calling to see if there are openings with bunny specialists, and they go really fast once canceled I’ve found.

From my experience with the reception desk, you have to tell the person that your bunny is injured to get an appointment. If you don’t, they’ll just tell you you can’t come and it’s a referral-only vet. Also, if you need a bunny specialist, don’t just ask for Dr David or reception will only check if there are appointments for him. We were turned away until we rang back asking about Dr Yui and Dr Mami, and were told we could see them.

I really hope everything goes well on this visit, and I’ll try to update with what happens.

Edit: I called just now to confirm my appointment was still there. I was told my appointment with David was fine, then the receptionist quickly asked me to hold. When she came back she said he’s actually booked out for the next 3 weeks and we are now seeing Cathy. So I dunno if they overbooked and gave our slot to someone else, or that slot with David was never available in the first place.

                Thank you for your update.

Yes, this saga of Dr Vella is common. What can you say? Strange scene.

Right now, best wishes to you and (((Thumper))) and please let us know how things go.

                xx
