I adopted a rabbit about a month ago from a rescuse, and was told he is 6 months old. He had been accustomed to eating alfalfa pellets, so I switched to Oxbow timothy pellets. He refuses to eat them. I’ve left them out with no alfalfa pellets or treats and he still doesn’t eat them, not even one. Otherwise, his diet is fine. He eats unbelievable amounts of Timothy hay and about 1-2 cups of greens (cilantro, mustard greens, and turnip greens are his favorites.)

Is there any way I can get him to like the pellets? I worry that he’s too skinny.

Welcome Rae and congratulations on the new bunny!

I did a change of pellets recently and my rabbits also turned their noses up. What worked for me was mixing the new into container with the old, to store. I think it could help the Timothy pellets absorb some of the aroma of the alfalfa ones.

When I gave them the mix, they did favour the old pellets and picked them out. But I think once they mistakenly nibbled one of the new, they found it wasn’t so bad. That’s my theory.
They can take a few weeks to really transition.

When I transitioned my boys from alfalfa to timothy, Bombur was fine, but Asriel was a brat. Took him a good 2-3 weeks to suck it up and eat the timothy pellets. Now he’s quite a pellet fiend xD Another thing that might help is the type of Oxbow. I feed mine the Garden Select because it has some veggie powder in the mix. The boys go mental for them.
