I got my lionhead when she was just a baby, the first time I did her nails I noticed she had one that was completely missing and she hated me touching around it, I figured maybe it tore off before I got her as she was kept in a small cage with tons of other baby bunnies, now she’s 9 months old and when I was trimming her other nails, I noticed that something is growing now?

Except, it’s not a normal nail.

It’s completely flat and hard, and it’s growing at an upwards angle. She doesn’t seem bothered when I touch it or mess with it, but I’m not sure if I should be trying to cut this, but I don’t want it to grow into her paw. Should I try to cut a little and see her reaction?

Also, the spot was a complete nub, no area for a new nail to grow back in and scabbed/healed over

My bun has nails like this, but she doesn’t let people touch them and throws crazy tantrums over them. The issue is if you let it grow too long it can get snagged again and that is very painful, or it grows into her paw which also isn’t good. Keeping it trimmed is a good idea, but do be mindful that you could face additional squirming when it comes to that nail

My Bam had a nail that grew in an upward curl. What ever happened to that nail, it happened before I knew him. He was prone to breaking nails, so my guess is it was an old break and then the nail grew back crooked. He never seemed bothered by it. I cut it like a normal nail.

If she doesn’t react with pain when you touch the nail and the surrounding tissues, I think she’ll be fine with normal nail trims. If there is pain and swelling etc, there could be an inflammation going on and she could need to have the claw completely extracted by a vet. But since you can hold your fingers where you hold them on the pic, it seems like it’s healed.

Do you know if nails that grow in like this have a quick still? It’s so flat and pure white I’m unsure of it (As Kookie’s nails are generally black) I’m just afraid of cutting it too short and hurting her.

I thought I’d give an update. I decided to try and cut the nail and had no problems doing it, she didn’t squirm or anything and I could barely do the ‘click click snip’ method because it was so thin that when I tried to do the first click it cut through it. No issues with a quick or anything, I’m assuming it has none or the nerve’s just dead

Thank you for the update! My Bam’s crooked nail seemed to have a quick, but your bun’s nail seems more malformed than his was. I’d keep an eye on it and feel around it at nail-clipping time/ the weekly once-over. Keep it short so it doesn’t tear.

It sounds like there was significant damage to the nail bed. This can happen if the nail is torn off. My guess is that the sensitive area is very close to the end of the toe. If the nail itself is flaky and brittle, then there probably isn’t a quick inside it.
