I also posted a question about my rabbit in his final days, but to summarize, our 12 year old rabbit may be in his final days, and while it’s mostly unlikely there’s a bacterial infection since he’s an indoor rabbit, I still want to ensure my cats are safe as well. We have kept our vet in the loop and they said in regards to our rabbit passing anything to our cats, again, because both the rabbit and the cats are indoor, it’s unlikely anything would be transmitted, I’m wondering what I might look for if a rabbit did have a bacterial infection or if anyone’s pet knowledge goes past rabbits, what I might look for in our cats as well.

        Thank you.

An indoor bunny can get a bacterial infection as well as an outdoor one. That has nothing to do with bacterial infections. Just like bacterial infections aren’t contagious. Viruses are contagious, but even then I doubt bunny to cat is unlikely. It’s also unlikely your bunny or cat will pass anything to each other.

Bacterial infections come in so many different shapes, its hard to say this is how you’ll know your bunny or cat has a bacterial infection.

Any bacteria your bunny has, your cat has already been exposed to for quite some time now. If your rabbit had something contagious, he would have had to have gotten it from somewhere else. Bacterial infections like URIs are typically the result of bacteria that was already there and was able to “overgrow”. This is why these types of infections are not contagious. So I wouldn’t be concerned about your cat becoming ill.
