        Hi guys!
So I brought my baby bunny home about 3 to 4 weeks ago and she was only about 4 and a half weeks old. With all of the research I thought I had done before getting her, I did not know that they should be weaned at 8 weeks old. But I took her in and I’ve been trying to give her all of the nutrients she needs. I’ve had her on unlimited alfalfa hay and I had her on unlimited pellets of the pellets that I got from the breeder. She seems to be doing well. She’s energetic, she binkys when I let her out of her hutch, and her poop has been normal.
I also wanted to note that about 2 weeks ago I had ran out of the breeders pellets without enough time to transition her into new ones so she had a sudden change in pellets to oxbow basics young rabbit food. After this sudden change I noticed her poops were a little darker, and she had some excessive cecotropes. But over the two weeks that seems to have corrected itself and I see a lot more regular round poops (still dark) and little to no cecotropes.
I’ve been continuing unlimited alfalfa hay and unlimited pellets but the more I read, the more I feel like she should be having a variety of hay. Should I give her alfalfa hay along with a blend of Timothy Hay and Orchard hay? Or should I just continue the alfalfa only.
I’m not giving her any veggies or fruits yet either.
I truly didn’t know that they had to be weaned at 8 weeks. But she has been adjusting so well!

It does sound like she is doing well.
You could certainly introduce some timothy or other grass hay now, along with her alfalfa. It will help for when you need to transition her off the alfalfa when she gets a bit older.

I’ve raised a bun from 4wks old. He also didn’t have any issues. I hope things continue to go well for this little one.

I got my bun at 9 weeks and from the beginning I never gave unlimited alfalfa because it is so much tastier to them and can make it harder to transition to other hays later on. At first I gave him some throughout the day along with other hay but he mostly ate the alfalfa so now he gets a handful at bedtime and that’s it. This way he still get some alfalfa but is forced to eat other hay throughout the day. He is almost five months now so I’m going to start reducing his alfalfa amount soon and transition him off of it all together.

Thanks so much guys! I was worried about how much to start off with. I’ve always heard pellets should be slowly introduced and veggies as well, but I figured a variety of hay should be fine to just put in there as an option.

I’ve read to switch out the alfalfa completely at around 5 months old?

Also, I will be taking her to a vet soon. I just recently got a pet insurance for her and I’m waiting for it to kick in.

Most likely, he was eating pellets at the breeder, so pellets are ok. Its best to wait until about 3 mo to introduce greens, unless he has been eating them since he started eating solid food. The immune system of baby bunnies is weaker, and so is their digestive system, so things that wouldn’t cause an older rabbit to have gas could cause major problems for kits.
