(please move if not in correct topic location)

So we brought a new boy home on monday night from the humane society. His name is Bonton and he is a 6lb american fuzzy lop. First night home he explored a bit but liked his expen more. he used his litter box, ate hay, pooped, peed, and ate his dinner overnight(all was gone except for a few pellets, he gets pellets and a variety of greens) Last night he explored more, ate more hay, peed, and even did some zoomies and binkies. But he didnt poop overnight and barely ate his food. maybe he was a bit stressed out because i left the ice maker on in the freezer and it can be quite loud. I saw him eat some of his greens this morning and my wife saw him leave a big poop pile before she left, so its good he has gone to the bathroom. i dont have any experience with a bunny thats never had a home before, so i was just wondering if i should be concerned about his eating habits this early. i have no idea what time he was fed at the HS, but he did get greens once a day and unlimited pellets and unlimited hay and water. I assume he needs time to adapt to an new home, sounds, smells, food schedule ect. since its only been 2 days since hes been home im not overly worried, especially since he ate hay and pooped. But any advice would be appreciated.

I think it’s all just to do with the settling in. I’m in the process of a move right now, and Bombur (yes, I know my problem bun xD) has been having some really small poops due to the stress of it. He’s not one for change. So It’s probably the same for your new little guy. I think just making him as comfortable as possible and having hay available and just keeping him on a consistent schedule will help him most.

Also, why were they giving him unlimited pellets as an adult? O.o

Im hopeful he will have eaten some food over the course of the day and pooped more. Honestly im not sure if its really unlimited, but the cages have a pellet feeder attached to the front that always has pellets in it. so maybe they do measure it out for a serving or a little more. I think they do that because theres no real set feeding schedule, its basically whenever one of the volunteers can do it. i do know thats its checked daily.

He is doing very well for being in a new environment. As long as a rabbit eats and poops within 12 hrs, its ok. If it goes beyond that, it is a problem.

i got home around 5 yesterday and he had pooped during the day more. but he went from the time i got home until this morning without pooping(sans a couple stray poops). i wasnt even worried about the eating of his chow as much as the pooping because he was eating hay on his own and still running around and didnt look distressed. had he not pooped by the time i got home today it would have been right to the vet for sure. im still so conditioned to how Gimly acted for food, which was eat it all right away no matter when you gave it to him. so everything is different with our new guy and its going to take time for each of us to feel each other out.

You could give him some baby gas drops next time you see that. Just to be on the safe side.

I guess i didnt really think about that because he was eating hay just fine, and when we fed him he ate some greens, then he explored and ate a bit more. then i saw him eat more on his own this morning. plus he wasnt sitting like he had gas. which makes me think he was scared or something stressed him out.

He’s really eaten a lot of hay tonight and pooped a bunch. Even came out and did runs and bunny jumps tonight?

Aww good! He’s probably so excited to finally have a home with people to love him!

Yeah, even when my boys are still eating just fine if they have tiny poop I also give gas drops just to play it safe. Ain’t nobody got time for more vet visits xD

haha thats true. not only did he hay smash all night and poop up until dinner time, he was running around chinning things and got pets on his bunny bed too. then he destroyed all his chow overnight and pooped more. he looked very pleased this morning.

I’ve noticed my buns tend to poop loads more overnight than they do in the day time, you’ll start to learn his habits soon enough

It sounds like he’s settling in very nicely! I’m sure he is extremely pleased!

As for the small-ish poops, any disruption of routines can do that. I stayed with my bun Vilde at my mum’s for two weeks over Christmas, and the first day, I noticed Vilde’s normally big poops were smaller. They soon went back to their normal size though. I gave just-in-case gas drops on a small piece of lettuce.
