Hi all! My sweet baby Gus has had this strange lip curl for over a month now. He eats and drinks fine, and has normal energy. I took him to the vet anyway and she could not determine what as wrong. She gave him one week of anti-inflammatory but it did not make a difference. She said the next step is to put him under and do a full look which will cost over $1,000.

I’m wondering if anyone has ever seen this before in a rabbit. It is specific to one side of his face. His eye on that side is slightly red and watery. But mostly, he just looks totally lopsided. His teeth look even and not overgrown. He isn’t even sensitive to me poking at the swollen cheek area. But it does it appear to be getting worse. Any words of wisdom are welcome!

          Hi there,

I remembered some similar issues before here on BB, and was able to dig up some of the threads, which discuss it as facial paralysis. Seems that some causes are harmless, others are a bit alarming. Do these seem similar to what’s going on with Gus?

The photos of this bun in particular look very much like your bun:

Here are a few others that discuss possibilities:

Sorry to hear your bunny is having this trouble. Two of our FL’s have experience with facial paralysis so I’ve alerted them to your thread.

Wooly has issues with facial paralysis. He has chronic sinus, eye and ear problems caused by tooth root problems. It began with his sinuses, but progressed to his ear and eye on one side. He has on and off sinus/ear infections, which are a vicious cycle due to the build up of mucus and ear gunk (as things cannot drain properly). Clearly, this is not the problem your bunny is having since you said he has no other symptoms. However, facial paralysis can be caused by many different things. All it takes is swelling/pressure around the 7th cranial nerve.

MediRabbit has a list of possible causes: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/Differentials/facial.htm

Can your vet simply do an x-ray? An x-ray shouldn’t cost $1000.
