Are salt and mineral blocks necessary? I heard that they are good for pregnant/nursing rabbits, but I’m not sure if they are good for other rabbits. When I was going horseback riding and helping out at a stable, I learned that salt blocks are good for horses but they are a supplement and shouldn’t be given constantly because it makes them urinate/drink more. (And it’s really smelly)

I had a trio of mice and they started to fight, no blood drawn at first so I thought everything was okay… But later in the morning our dominant female was eating one of the other mice. It was the worst thing that had ever happened with me owning mice. My mom and I thought it was because she didn’t have enough salt and was craving it. (Don’t rodents and other animals eat their young if threatened or if they need salt?)

Thanks, sorry for the gruesome detail XD

Completely unnecessary. Pellets should provide the right amount of salt needed.

Hello! The reason that mice eat each other is not because they are craving salt. Eating their own species is a last resort. She was probably very territorial and wanted to keep her territory clean. And I’d suggest you remove the other mouse and keep her safe in a separate cage so this doesn’t happen again. Or you could upgrade their cage size so that they can get away from each other as they please. And extra salt is unneeded for rabbits unless they have a health issue which should be addressed by your vet. Rabbits can get all their salt and minerals with a proper diet of 24/7 hay, leafy greens, and the occasional pellet. A rabbit licking a salt block is the equivalent to us just eating pure salt. Who would want to eat salt? And most rabbits have no interest in them anyway. Hope this helped, and good luck!

              I agree. Unnecessary.
